Hope some JP experts or native could help me understand clearly what did this character's thought
Story
The writer took inspiration from Chinese Three Kingdoms novel - before the attack of the Anti 董卓 Alliance into Imperial capital Luoyang). The protagonist 一刀 and his friends is on the Alliance army side, and they're discussing their plan to infiltrate the Forbidden city to rescue 董卓 and the Emperor , before the leader of this alliance 袁紹 can get into Luoyang (i think in this version of Three Kingdoms the writer let 董卓 to be a good character)
Then a character 孫乾 volunteered to help/escort protagonist and his rescue team into the Forbidden City (where the Emperor and 董卓 lives). Protagonist then questioned 孫乾 why go so far to help them.
(*Note: protagonist's rescue team including 劉備, and character 孫乾 in this story seems like to serve 劉備 )
孫乾「……北郷さま、どうかなさいまして？」(北郷 is real name of protagonist)
一刀(Protagonist)「あ、いや……別に」
孫乾「……」
でも……俺をじっと見つめる視線は、俺の心にある疑念まで見透かしてるみたいで。
一刀「なら……さ。失礼を承知で聞くけど……」
一刀「どうして孫乾は、ここまで俺たちに力を貸してくれるの？護衛の件がバレたら、徐州だってどうなるかわかんないんだぞ」
これだけの事、目を瞑ってくれるだけでも十分ありがたいのに護衛の件が知られたら、徐州は無関係だって言い張るのも難しくなる。
もちろん、徐州が董卓に恩があるのは聞いた。でも、だからって孫乾がここまでする理由には……徐州そのものを天秤に掛ける理由としては、弱い気がする。(>>this is the part i feel hard to understand ><)
孫乾「北郷さま。人が誰かにお仕えする時、一番大切なものが何か……おわかりになりますか？」
一刀「……？ 何だろう」
孫乾「私は、そのためにこのお役目を引き受けるのです。私に関する一切の事、気に病む必要はございませんわ」
一刀「……変なこと聞いてごめん。護衛はお願いするよ」
