I am doing a academic project about Japanese and car, so I want to know:
When a Japanese decides to buy a car, what will be the biggest selling point in his/her mind?

I laid a vote on internal space. You would be surprised the number of people who have sex in their cars here. A good example is the CUBE. It is a very small car, easy to manuver and park in small spaces, but the front seats fold completely flat, and is almost like a damn bed! No humps to get in the way or nothing!

Depending on the age group, I would say younger people go for power/speed/appearance.

The older crowd go for options/appearance/fuel economy/and luxury features.

Other than the part where it must be able to start and go. I would say that Gas mileage is big. Prices are going up, and people are always on the go.

What would make you think that Japanese people would all choose their car based on the same criteria? Japanese people are just as varied as any other nationality. Perhaps an actual survey asking Japanese people what they look for in a car would be more effective, and give you actual numbers to go by instead of a pile of speculation.

we did it in the america. if you look at the type of cars in the early 70's compared to the type of cars in the early 80's

the population didnt want the gas guzlers anymore so based on criteria they started making diff cars

IIRC, the shift to more fuel efficient cars was a response to the consumer trends that followed the fuel crises of the 70's; kind of ironic that we still don't see truly affordable, fuel efficient vehicles on the consumer market, and the price of gas has once again hit record highs.

My point is that if the OP (who hasn't posted since December) wanted to know what kind of cars Japanese people buy and why, he should look to consumer reports, or at least, the kind of cars that sell in Japan, rather than polling a bunch of foreigners.
