I was wondering this since Maciamo changed my flag to the United states (I selected a different country) and told me I lived in phoenix (He was close enough, I live about 40 minutes away from phoenix.)

Since Im' not a mod, or a admin here, and probably will never be, I was wondering to know if I could figure out where someone lives from their email. Because people here can figure out where you live and even the city. So how can Ifigure out where someone lives and what city/country they are from from their email? I use yahoo mail.

Not sure about e-mail, but for net forums such as this, your IP number gets sent along with your post. IP numbers are, I believe, allocated geographically (much like telephone area codes, for example). You probably have a dynamic IP number (the last few numbers get changed each time you connect to your service provider), but the part that doesn't change still allows you to be spotted pretty closely geographically.

How do I find out someones IP address from their post?

Thanks

You can't, unless Thomas chooses to make them visible.

Mikecash, the reason I want to do this is to see if my friend is really living in japan. He apparently speaks it, and I want to meet him someday, but I'm afraid he is a internet predator. There's always the chance someone will be. I just dont want to take any chance. If I can find out that he really lives in japan for sure then I would be alot less suspicious. Is there anyway to find out?

Get him to share photo's, talk over voice chat or something, even a liar can only lie about so much, webcams for a start are a good way to prove it.

And just have a sixth sense for a liar, the only real way to know what its like to live in japan really, and convey japanese-ness, is to HAVE lived in japan a good while, and be highly sociable with the local japanese, if it sounds like he's talking about japan with very little knowledge or sounding like a foreigner there rather then a local, then chances are he isnt local.

Anyway, its not like this net predator is in your house or anything, so no worries, if he asks if he can come meet you and stuff and is being pushy about it, then you know japanese or not, hes a bit dodgy, so you can ignore him and stuff.

Is this the same person you mentioned in your post asking about people not watching the news? Are you suspecting it's an internet pretender using the excuse of not watching television as a way to dodge questions he doesn't know the answer to?

How about sending a PM to an admin, giving the person's user name (if he has posted here) and asking them to check if the IP originates in Japan or not?

Maybe mike. You never know..
I did do that, actually sent it to a moderator too. Thanks mike

If you have Yahoo mail, for example, set the Yahoo preferences to "full headers" and you'll see the person's ip in the mail they send you, provided they don't know how to bounce their ping. You can then take the person's ip and enter it into one of the online tracer software apps (such as visualroute.visualware.com) and it will show you where it's from.

It's wise that you are so cautious. The internet is LOADED with predators of different kinds. I liked the cam idea that someone else had. That would work, too. A person can pick up a cam for like $20 nowadays, so if they won't do it, there's a reason.

Yes, thank you. It's even worse on IRC chats. I think my friend is a nice guy but you never know. I've heard a bunch of horrible stories.

I did it. It mentions "hops" I dont know what hops are. But for the IP address it says 5 of them are in the US, the others are in tokyo and in japan. This person lives in Ebina, apparently (That's what this person told me.)

Will cams work on MSN messenger? I doubt this person has a cam or will pick one up. Isn't it a hassle to?

Hmm, not everyone who doesn't have/won't get a cam is dodgy. I don't have a cam and I'm glad about it. I'm too lazy; and in any case, I like to retain a degree of anonymity (no thanks to jref for turning me into picture posting *****  ).

if you recieved it in hotmail there is an option to show more info about emails when recieving them and i think that it might show the senders ip but i am not sure, you could always offer to send them something over a ftp client and then they would have to give it to you.

On the other hand, I'm having a hard time imagining anyone lying about living in Ebina.

I don't figure out how it could work, unless the person was crazy enough to put their real town of residence in when they were registering their email address. :?

yeah, you dont exactly need to give out your address on the net do you?

Don't tell anyone, but I put in false names and addresses for my email accounts..And I'm always at the library and my friend and relative's house to use their computer, because I still need to reboot my old computer. It only has 60 RAM. Talk about pathetic. So anyone to tracks down my IP address will probably get my relatives or friends. I dunno. What I don't understand is, why would anyone want to know all that personal info about somebody else? I'm lost.

Don't tell anyone, I just posted this on a public forum viewable by precisely anyone.

Seriously though, I do the same thing alot--anonymity can be a good thing.

I can understand your concerns GoldCoinLover, in October I took a trip to Boston to spar with a guy I met on the internet. My freinds were going nuts about it: "What if he's a stalker or someting? What if he tries to kill you?" I was going there to fight with the guy, I don't see how him trying to kill me was that much more to worry about. 😊

I'd known the guy online for over a year, he'd posted numerous pictures of himself and given many verifiable details about where he lived--and he had a number of people on line who claimed to know him IRL who likewise posted pictures and other identifiable stuff in the course of our conversations.

I figured it was a bit too much trouble to go through to lure a martial arts instructor into a trap--I mean, wouldn't a preadator at least pick a less dangerous target?

I went to Boston and had a great time, we sparred, hung out--I got to meet most of his freinds that had also posted. It was great, but I suppose I really was taking my life in my hands regardless of how sure I was.

I guess my best advice is to be absolutely sure you're comfortable with the risk before you meet someone you met online. There's always the risk that they are some kind of predator--even with all his IRL friends, there was always the chance I was walking into an ambush by a cult or a gang or something--but if you think the chance is small enough that you're willing to risk it, go ahead.

Just be mindfull of what can happen if you're wrong.

That's realy the only advice I can give about any situation:

Weigh the risks, and don't do it if you aren't willing to accept the consequences of the worst-case-scenario. Saying "Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine" and not considering the possible consequences is a good way for bad, baaaaad things to happen.
