Don't tell anyone, I just posted this on a public forum viewable by precisely anyone.
Seriously though, I do the same thing alot--anonymity can be a good thing.
I can understand your concerns GoldCoinLover, in October I took a trip to Boston to spar with a guy I met on the internet. My freinds were going nuts about it: "What if he's a stalker or someting? What if he tries to kill you?" I was going there to fight with the guy, I don't see how him trying to kill me was that much more to worry about.
I'd known the guy online for over a year, he'd posted numerous pictures of himself and given many verifiable details about where he lived--and he had a number of people on line who claimed to know him IRL who likewise posted pictures and other identifiable stuff in the course of our conversations.
I figured it was a bit too much trouble to go through to lure a martial arts instructor into a trap--I mean, wouldn't a preadator at least pick a less dangerous target?
I went to Boston and had a great time, we sparred, hung out--I got to meet most of his freinds that had also posted. It was great, but I suppose I really was taking my life in my hands regardless of how sure I was.
I guess my best advice is to be absolutely sure you're comfortable with the risk before you meet someone you met online. There's always the risk that they are some kind of predator--even with all his IRL friends, there was always the chance I was walking into an ambush by a cult or a gang or something--but if you think the chance is small enough that you're willing to risk it, go ahead.
Just be mindfull of what can happen if you're wrong.
That's realy the only advice I can give about any situation:
Weigh the risks, and don't do it if you aren't willing to accept the consequences of the worst-case-scenario. Saying "Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine" and not considering the possible consequences is a good way for bad, baaaaad things to happen.
