brain scientists, like Pshrinks (psychologists) or brain surgeons, or anybody with a doctoral degree.....so, doctors that make ducky sounds = quacks... :D

You, people, know nothing about gyaru-kei style, and yeah the website you lined is about 5 years old or so.

In those pictures, they used bronzers, self-tanning creams/spray, brown makeup.

They have dyed hair: blonde, orangey-brown, light brown etc :eek:

From what you ppl posted up and know nothing off.. the styles in those pictures are:

Ganguro (means black face)
Yamanba ( the one with the extreme make)
Burituri ( dark dark dark skin)
Gonguro (Darker then Ganguro)
Kogyaru

After the fad faded, but didn't die out.. they put them all together and just called themselves 'gyaru'. It then split up into different groups

lolita
Oneegal
b-gal/b-kei (hiphop gal)
Ganjiro (white skin)
Manba (updated Yamanba)
Celeb gal

Most older used to be gyaru turned into gyaru-mama

And the list goes on :eek:

Also the style came from Amuro Namie when they saw her 'sweet 16' cd and by there favorite R&B singers that they wanted to become like.

The history is long.. but that's when the big BOOM happened.

I see no differences between preppy ppl, Gothic ppl, plan pale ppl etc. Everyone has their style. And Japan is one of the most trendy places on this planet. There TREND-SETTERS and always will be.

Again.. white lipstick is way better than black lipstick any day.

I see nothing funny about it? Who is laughing? Sadly, you are the only one tho =\ I am serious as far as I know. You don't know anything about the style to be laughing about it.

Again. If you saw oneegal style or celeb style, it's nothing like the pictures you guys base everything off. The style or type you're having a problem with is the 'Yamanba' which personally I don't like that much ( it's the girl with all the stickers and all the make-up). So don't base one girl and clump them all together, saying its Ganguro.. it just makes everyone look foolish.

You know what is funny since you put :D !!! In that way, ppl on the net finding that site and basing everything off of one site. And NEVER played a foot on Japan ground. haha, omg, I can't stop laughing omg

I say go to Shibuya 109, hit the stores Albarosa, cocolulu, egoist, roconails ..etc. and ask them about gyaru .. they will tell u they will tell u they are gyaru.

yes, some of them were scary.. the old skool Yamanba was, but the newer one called Manba .. is adorable.. well, Ka-tan, the manba leader, is the cutest.

Everything goes through stages in fashion, like fashion here in North America or anywhere else other than Japan. That had their bad fashion bids, but it improves overtime to make it look better.

( but the ones on the site.. as the start of the boom of ganguro fashion and Yamanba fashion)

They did it to be different from the rest of Japan. Japan back then wanted to keep everything the same. They didn't want outsiders to come to Japan either, but there were cases.

Everyone had to be black hair, white skin.. period.

Soo, it started with Kogyarus/ and high school guys dyeing their hair brown. That was the 1st step. That was back then uncalled for, and ppl didn't want that.. then there was loose socks and soo on

I dunno. Something about that general look and msot of the girls around 109 in shibuya. They just look... dirty?

It's not just the tan.

There are many things.

The unwashed looking near dreadlocked hair. The smoking that so many do. The way they just sit on the dirty pavement or gutters. Their voices, sometimes sound quite harsh. Stories about them from friends and co-workers. The news story from a few years ago about Shibuya girls that won't change their undies or bathe for a few days, which I kind of unfairly attribute to them. The fake tan stains on their hands. Excess makeup.

There are a lot of contributing factors. I just get this grubby vibe from some.

Although some are indeed very sexy. The more moderate ones.
 
I don't find the people in these pictures very attractive how they look, of course. But I don't really like tans anyway, and not too much makeup either.

What is funny is seeing somebody getting so enraged over some comments, then do some backstepping later on...

There is nothing wrong with the fashion if the individual enjoys it. I don't care for the excessive makeup and the extremes that many Japanese young people feel they need to do to be "different" or to "stand out" in the crowd...but that is a personal view.

What I find ironic, however, is that those young ones that put on excessive makeup and tend to look quite scary, only end up just being part of the crowd of excessively made-up folks and are no longer unique...

When I lived in Japan, everybody had black hair (except for the old folks or those that were bald, of course)...then when I went back over the course of the past several years for visits, nearly everybody had their hair dyed all sorts of colors, to either appeal to the foreign look or to try and be part of the "crowd."

The part that I dislike, however, was when I went into one of the barbershops in one local town outside Tokyo, to get a haircut, and the 20-something barber looked at me as if I were insane because I didn't want to dye my hair some funked out style that was the rage right then...
Nah, I didn't want to spend the extra hundred dollars for hair dyeing when the hair cut itself already costs nearly $35 when converted from yen...

to each their own....I'll save my money to spend on the food instead, thank you very much! :D

Again, I am not saying everyone spends their money on clothing, But those girls do lots of it. And I for one spend a lot on clothes, shoe things to wear. I don't fancy food that much it's really a minor thing to me.

I was just making things right instead of these rumors of Gyaru-Kei style floating around on this board. I, for one, wasn't trying to get up anyone's skin, but I was really your comments about them are a bit harsh. You don't really know them personally. I have about 10 gyaru friends and there very nice. I myself is a Oneegal, light make etc.


The point of my posts.. is to make it clear, stating there ARE different types. Of Gyaru, and that's ALL I was trying to say.. but I guess ppl didn't understand what I was trying to do.

But saying remarks about the style, and yes, people have their own kind of the point of view. But still, it a bit harsh, and the gyaru I know who are the sweetest ppl I know get real upset when people say stuff like this and know nothing.

YES, there are scary gals, dirty ones ( there mainly poor) trying to keep up with the lifestyle. But there are many gals ( being gal have no ethnic) who are already dark-skinned or brown.. and seeing remarks like this gets them upset.

I was shown this same thread a while back by one of my gaijin gyaru friends, and I dunno it upset her.

That's why now since I found this again. I wanted just to point out their differences.

As with most things in these types of forums, chances are we are all on the same page, just looking at it from different volumes...
perhaps I exaggerated a bit... :D
I'll admit I have little to do with the folks in Shibuya these days. However, from my contacts who still live and work in the greater Tokyo arena, and from other sites and news items I do catch, I cannot say I'm impressed by some of the things that are called fashion amongst the shibukaji crowd...
But take what I saw with a pound or kilo of salt since as everybody that does know me well here, I know nothing.....and DO know less than all of you! :D
So, arguing with a self-professed know-it-nothing may be a futile gesture....but you may do so, if you so choose to....and I'll respond with my know-nothings to bring further chaos to these pages.... :D

Left Japan back in '94, during the initial onset of the current fashion trends that probably originated in the Harajuku crowd...

Been back a few times since then... It always brings a :D at all of the new engrish out there... I still think it's a conspiracy...the Engrish....

Yeah, some things that come out of there.. like I understand why people don't like the really dark tans.. of some of the girls.. but really, they don't tan like that anymore. Well, that dark.

But their fashions are wacky and wild 'Japanese street fashion'. Like from the book Fruits, have you heard of it?

I remember way back when they had a fashion called decora? There heavily decorated, and they have green, pink, purple, every colour of the rainbow hair. And wear tones of hello kitty, and kiddy stuff. Have u ever seen that?
 
Saw some fashion chick starting the magazine "Vogue" in Japan, and there were a lot of ganguro girls that hadn't gone overboard with it in that show...

I must say, I found them quite hot... the ones that didn't go all out with the panda thing (dark-mud-brown skin and white lips and white around the eyes O_o)

Yeah, haha there are some that overdo it.. but they like it hehe.. They properly have boyfriends anyways lolz.

Brown skin is beautiful ^^ I have no problem with skin colour. Panda make.. yeah they don't do that anymore it's mostly light makeup. Only Manba's do the panda thing still but somehow it looks better than how it was 5-6 years ago.

But still, it's too much makeup for me.. 😌
