trends will always strive for the opposite of what has been hitting you over the head as "in" for enough years to make you hate it (not just clothing). so it's pretty natural that tacky is "in" at some point, especially in a country with what looks like an insanely active fashion scene. Sometimes what is "in" now is out after rethinking it over again the next moment! 
And somebody else thinks it should be "in" and makes a million yen with sales of the "new" fashion....
then a generation or two later, somebody rediscovers it and calls it "retro" and makes even more money off of it...
one of the strangest things I've seen was a Japanese country music band singing American Country Western classics in English, but they couldn't hold a conversation in English at all
Then again, there was the one Dokkiri Camera (Japan's version of Candid Camera) I saw a number of years ago that had this guy decked out in Heavy Metal gear with electric guitar suddenly start singing in enka (Japanese folk songs) that startled a great many onlookers
to each their own....

Fashion is crazy.. my sister is soo into it. She does fashion treads even before they happen. As for me I only like two kinds .. asian style type clothing or things that look super kawaii XDDD.
Bright colours strange things are my thing, but you know everything here in Toronto is really boring looking. All greys thats all you see @_@....

I like to go out with ganguro girls because they have always time enough and they have that funny dance. I must admit when they see me they freak out and they are painting me and they style me like i'm a puppet
Although some are gorgeous with make-up they are still happy and friendly towards me and i've made a lot of ganguro friends while back in Tokyo.

You have to be awfully good looking to pull off Ganguro. Most look ugly in it.
