Hi there, obviously I'm new here. I've been interested in most things Japanese for the last 10 years at least. Now that I have twin daughters, I want to teach them to speak Japanese . . . so I guess I better learn too!! Anyway, nice to meet you all!

Yup, that's me. Thanks for the compliment! And nope, not married yet . . . I did things all wrong! Ugh. (I live with their dad though.)

Anyway, I bought the girls an English/Japanese DVD and English/Japanese picture dictionary for their birthday. Hopefully they're interested when they get them.

Welcome, Icedyn! Ah, another poor victim living in the backwater state of Oregon, where the state and local county legislatures are so primitive that they still think you can kill two stones with one bird...

I am the resident know-it-nothing, so don't take my word for anything. Master Lexico knows more than I do, and his wisdom is found spread forth in a myriad of threads throughout this forums page, as well as other great ones far more knowledgeable than mine self...

The first thing I would do if I were you about teaching kids Japanese is locating a local Japanese video store (if you live near one where you do live in Oregon), and see about renting something that is geared for children (perhaps even with subtitles in engrish). Or look around various websites that cater to Japanese media and see about trying to buy some video or DVD (assuming it is a region free dvd player you have) and letting your kids watch that for a while...

something to ponder.....I'm sure some of the others have better ideas

I'm but a babe in this great big family, but will nonetheless say WELCOME to the gang !! I agree that you are a goodlooking woman, and that the advice on the videos and all is right on. I use English in the house with my three sons about 80% of the time ( and they spout back Japanese about 80% of the time ) so I greatly admire your concern about being able to speak the language yourself. As has been argued here in Japan in some other forms (not here in the Japan Forum) it may be best to not worry so much about what your own level of fluency is in helping your children to learn and use the target language, but is relatively beneficial to just speak out; and often. Give it go for yourself and for them, using whatever it is that you know and learn along the way--growing together with them in the Japanese language.
