This is my first contribution to this site, so I thought it best to write a short self introduction.
I am not actually a gaijin in Japan. I have been many times, but I now reside in Sydney, Australia. I lived in Japan in the mid 1980s and have returned back many times due to the type of work I'm currently involved.
<>Workwise I am a Japanese language teacher at a local university in Sydney who specialises in teaching elementary Japanese. I also teach a course in which manga and anime are used instead of a textbook. I also offer a course in intercultural communication.
I guess my primary motivation for studying Japanese and about Japan was my father who was a prisoner of war in Japan during WWII. When I was making subject choices at high school, he told me not to waste my time learning French and to study Japanese for Australia's future. That was back in the mid 1970s !
For the research side of things, I write about manga and anime, especially the construction of Japanese masculinities in these kinds of texts. I am also interested in identity and language learning. And as a new field of inquiry, I am beginning a new project about being a gaijin in Japan, hence my joining this site.

I am seeking participants to complete a survey which explores the feelings, perceptions, and attitudes you have towards other gaijin in Japan.
