I'm using my laptop right now which doesn't have any Japanese fonts installed, meaning I get questionmarks all the time instead of Japanese. I googled and found a link from microsoft where I could possibly download them, if I enter my validation code (God knows what that may be).

I'm sure there are other ways to get them ?

Installing IME is no problem, but still I can't read nor type in Japanese.

I tried downloading the Japanese language pack on the microsoft website, using the validation code plug-in but it doesn't work for me.

Someone knows any alternate ways ?

Generally East-Asian character support is installed from the WinXP CD-ROM. Do you have that?

No I haven't. I'm in Japan right now using the laptop of my brother.

Just download a copy of WinXP from one of the 'usual sites' and install files for East Asian languages - that should do the trick.

If that fails - what's the brand of your friend's laptop - it's quite amazing how many different manufacturer's OEM copies of WinXP one man can accumulate over the years.
