I think that's a really good idea...although Kyo's lyrics are sometimes clear (I mean there aren't million ways of how to interpret '**** you'), I don't really know what he wants to say with them...and he doesn't talk about them in interviews...so discussing them here would be really cool!!!!

Machiavellism title analysis: I believe this is in referance to Machiavelli, who wrote the book "The Prince". It's about taking control and keeping it, mostly "ends justifies the means" stuff (the wikipedia article if anyone's more interested: Niccolò - Wikipedia`_Machiavelli). In reguards to the lyrics of the song, i think it's ironic in many ways because Kyo comes off as powerless in the song, like a puppet almost. At the same time he's trying to take control, both of himself and of the audience. I mention the latter because he has said before (sorry i dont have a direct source right now ;_ that it almost feels like the audience cries out for blood since he started cutting--that he's no longer in control and he feels like the audience becomes upset/dissapointed in him when he does not harm himself on stage. the "ends justifying the means" also applies-- though his stage life is unhealthy in general mentally as well as physically, he does it because it will all be worth it if someday he finds his meaning and communicates his true feelings from the heart.

[ BEAUTIFUL DIRT ]

To understand this song, I think it's necessary to analyze the last line before the rest. In Beautiful Dirt, Kyo is accusing and threatening ﾂ"heﾂ"/ﾂ"youﾂ". But at the end he says ﾂ"You know me, I just shut my eyes to my own shortcomings... heheﾂ". Thus I think that this is actually a self-hate song (or even split-personality)ﾂ… as if Kyo were screaming at his reflection in a mirror. ﾂ'Shutting one's eyes to one's shortcomings' is a form of denial. Thus Kyo accuses ﾂ"youﾂ" and not ﾂ"Iﾂ". In this context, the ﾂ"you know meﾂ" also employs Kyo's warped humor, as the ﾂ"youﾂ" and ﾂ"Iﾂ" are in fact the same person; Kyo. The giggle at the end clues one in to his twisted reasoning, like a child that can't help but laugh as he lies to his parents.

The accusations are directed first at ﾂ"heﾂ", more removed than ﾂ"youﾂ". The first two lines remind me of older and younger siblings; often the younger one looks up to the older one, though the older one can hardly ever be bothered with the younger one. All the same, the smaller sibling will unconditionally love them. In Kyo's case, this means the ﾂ"heﾂ" part of himself is the older sibling. Also in Kyo's case, he ﾂ"will love him until I dieﾂ" BECAUSE ﾂ"heﾂ" looks down on Kyoﾂ… again with the denial, the part of Kyo that is talking hates itself, and it loves the other part for recognizing that when even it itself cannot. All the same, later in the very same stanza Kyo commands the ﾂ"heﾂ" side of himself to die. Early on, it is clear that one of the characteristics Kyo hates (about himself) is vanity as well.

The conflict over ﾂ"who's winningﾂ" the deception brings much more literal meaning to the phrase ﾂ"inner battleﾂ". Another interesting thing happens in this stanza, as Kyo switches from ﾂ"heﾂ", more distant, to ﾂ"youﾂ", the more aggressive article. However, I think the aggression comes out of defense, as the uncertainty of the ﾂ"battleﾂ" brings Kyo a step closer to admitting his denial. As a defense he switches to aggressive insult in his insecurity, like a wounded animal. In any case the ﾂ"Iﾂ" sees the ﾂ"youﾂ" side as the innocent one, using the word ﾂ"babyﾂ".

Regaining composure, Kyo, attempting to reaffirm himself, states that ﾂ"he respects me/ but he doesn't want to admit itﾂ", an empty and unproven statement woven more from Kyo's bravado than any real fact. However in the next line he slips up a little, as indicated by the use of ﾂ"youﾂ". Kyo has already illustrated his own weakness, so one does not know which ﾂ"youﾂ" the statement is directed at. It could be a lash out at ﾂ"heﾂ" for not admitting respect, but this would come from a place of insecurity; getting mad about it. It could also be him snapping at himself, frustrated with his own weakness for craving the respect of his other self, frustrated with his own weakness at existing and getting in the ﾂ"goodﾂ" half's way. Then he brings in a girl, as assumed from the derogative word ﾂ"hoﾂ"ﾂ… and I also assume that she isn't an actual prostitute, as Kyo seems to just be snapping about her and trying to get to the ﾂ"youﾂ" by calling her that. This brings up an interesting dynamic; almost a love triangle. The ﾂ"heﾂ"/ﾂ"youﾂ" side of Kyo loves the girl, while the ﾂ"Iﾂ" side of Kyo is like a parasite on the ﾂ"heﾂ" and hates the girl for making the ﾂ"heﾂ" feel the way it does, or maybe even for tainting the other, better, innocent half (in this case the girl could be more ho-ly, persay).

The first line is ironic, as the song is not a ballad at all. It's like Kyo is saying that the ﾂ"youﾂ" (and again, the use of ﾂ"youﾂ" shows Kyo is particularly weak at that moment) does not deserve a love song; that dirt is as beautiful a thing as he deserves.

Kyo's a gangstaaaﾂ… I still don't knowﾂ… but the threat seems to grow more dangerous. I think he also is just going crazy, because it makes less and less sense. I mean, he obviously is not mentally 100% in these lyrics in the first place, as he is hating on/talking to himself one moment but also saying he loves him and GAHﾂ…

This word is in English and separated from the other words as it stands alone. To me it seems almost like a sound effect, like in those cartoons where everything is teetering on the edge of a cliff and it is the feather that slowly floats down on the top that tips the scale. The final ﾂ"blowﾂ" is what does it, sending Kyo into pure hatred, denial, and aggression, maybe even to the point of utter madness.

Kyo snaps, not holding back at all in his screaming anymore. He uses strong insults, but he also uses ﾂ"youﾂ", so Kyo is feeling weak despite ﾂ'the blame' landing on the other self (in Kyo's head at least). Kyo hates the innocent part of himself, the part that loves the girl. However the next line is very juvenile, with very simple sentence structure and logic (ﾂ"you are living, so please dieﾂ"). Maybe the side that is speaking is in fact the innocent side? Again, Kyo's denial destroys itself and his self-hate cannot be contained. And finally, the last line giving in to his weakness, to the denial, as he slips completely into madness, parting with that strangely innocent yet disturbing giggle.

The spring breeze makes the uneasy sound as my dreams crumble and my future breaks.

I believe Kyo is describing his a death in this songﾂ… His ﾂ"dreams [crumbling]ﾂ" could easily just be a betrayal or a crash with reality, however his ﾂ"future breaksﾂ". Kyo could possibly have gone through a falling-out with the one he loves (as we know Kyo well enough to realize that the only thing that could completely shatter his future is a broken heart), but his tender and loving words to his significant other lead one to believe that he has not, in fact, had his heart broken. It is clear that he and his love are separated or separating, whether this means Kyo's death, his significant other's, or even both. He trails off with ﾂ"I have no moreﾂ…ﾂ", both to cut off his connection to/the understanding of the audience as well as his own life... his literal or metaphoric life one still does not know.

I want to be with you more, I want to be near you.
I try to hide my weak tears behind a smile, but I can't hide anymore.
My years of dreaming, at the end, will my true self be there?

His wish to be with the ﾂ"anonymous girlﾂ" he loves once again means they were together, but now are separate (no duh). Kyo tries to hide his weaknessﾂ―his sadness for her death or his own inability to liveﾂ―for her benefit. Yet despite all the love he has for her, he can't pretend and he can't actﾂ… both he cannot hide who he is and he does not have the strength. After so much time spent wearing a mask of happiness, he's not sure he remembers his own face. Which begs the question: did SHE see who he really was? With the second reference to dreams, one can see that many years of Kyo's life have been spent ﾂ'in a dream'. Thus when his ﾂ"dreams crumbleﾂ" in the first stanza, his life itselfﾂ―his persona, his hopes, his idealsﾂ―could very well end. Kyo's death becomes more likely than that of his ﾂ"anonymous girlﾂ".

I tried so hard to bear with it, I even put out my hand.
But what it all comes down to was now;
we're in hell under his control.
So this is the end I tell you,
Lights will be turned off and the stage will turn to darkness.

Kyo tried to continue; ﾂ"to bear with itﾂ", ﾂ"itﾂ" meaning life. He tried to live like a normal, happy person, even reaching out to someoneﾂ―the girlﾂ―but in the end it didn't bring him a happy ending. All he has left is the sadness and loss of this moment. ﾂ"We're in hell under his controlﾂ" implies that Kyo and the girl have no say over their destiniesﾂ―like they were doomed to unhappiness by God from the beginning. This imagery continues with the metaphor of the stageﾂ… their lives have been nothing but a show for some greater being, their pain forgotten as it all ﾂ"[turns] to darknessﾂ".

Let me hear your voice more. I still want to be here.
Goodbye to an anonymous girl I loved from my heart.
I remember the promise we made, by the spring breeze I felt in my back.

ﾂ"I still want to be hereﾂ" most likely means it is Kyo who is dying, and not the anonymous girl. The word ﾂ"anonymousﾂ" is also interesting; does this mean that the girl does not want anyone to know that she is with him? Or maybe that he never in fact met her? Maybe it means that her face and name are not important at all, just that he loved her, though it could be any scenario. I personally like the ﾂ"has never met herﾂ" idea, but that one doesn't necessarily work the best with the other lyrics.

The use of ﾂ"youﾂ", however, makes the listener out to be the ﾂ"anonymous girlﾂ". Perhaps the nameless fans whom he loves so much are the objects of his affection. This brings new meaning to the earlier lyrics of the song as well. ﾂ"I try to hide my weak tears behind a smile, but I can't hide anymoreﾂ" becomes about his status as a role model to so many fans. He must feel the pressure to sing some optimism to them, to help give them a meaning, but he himself does not know his own meaning, and for that he feels weak. He cannot hide his darkness and depression. After the ﾂ"years of dreamingﾂ", of singing on stage to masses, of ﾂ"idolﾂ" status, of weaving and becoming characters (other lyrics in other songs, such as embryo, mazoheist of decadence, etc.), he is not sure if the person he was before he became ﾂ"Kyoﾂ" exists anymoreﾂ… He persevered in the music business, he ﾂ"even put out [his] handﾂ", reaching out to (most likely) his band mates, but in the end he is still doomed, like he was before he started. No meaning lends itself to the stage imagery, as it is his lifeﾂ… the ﾂ"fate worse than deathﾂ" that Kyo is now facing is not in fact his own physical death, but a death from the stage and from his fans. That is what he fears most. In the this stanza, Kyo wants to hear the fans' voices; cheering, singing, crying. He wants to forever stand on the stage, he ﾂ"still [wants] to be hereﾂ".

ﾂ"The promiseﾂ", most likely a promise of love (to forever be together etc.) was made in the spring, a time of new life. At the beginning of the song, he mentions that ﾂ"the spring breeze makes uneasy soundsﾂ", so it has been a year or a number of years since the promise was first made. However that time is past now and the mood is now uneasy. In regards to the second interpretation, maybe the band formed in spring? I can't really analyze this part because I don't know. His weak sadness becomes more tangible and dangerous, as ﾂ"tears mix with bloodﾂ". His deep depression may have rashly lead to his deathﾂ―a suicideﾂ―yet now he realizes too late that he really does want to live for the nameless girl. Most likely it was less simple; he may have unconsciously sabotaged himself. But now in his last moments, he realizes his ﾂ"new dreamﾂ": his love for the girl. If the girl is the fans, however, the blood is clearly from his performance. The blood crystallizes what he was once unsure about, causing him to see what really matters.

Voices seem to be a person's essence in Kyo-landﾂ… with that in mind, by saying that he wants to sing with the girl, he wants to go on with her foreverﾂ… he wants to bare his true self to her, his raw humanity and real emotions. This is a big deal in Kyo-dom, since he admits he is very guarded (earlier on stating ﾂ"I even put out my handﾂ", ﾂ"evenﾂ" showing intense reluctance to reach out). If the girl is in fact the fans, the meaning remains essentially the same, if not more literal. He wants to continue doing what he's doing, and he wants them (us) to continue what we're doingﾂ―singing with and supporting him.

No it's great, really interesting to see someone elses perspectives on the songs. When you relate 'Machiavellism' to what he said about the cutting and stuff, yeah thats true I never thought of it like that before.
I found your analysis of 'Beautiful Dirt' interesting too. The two-persona thing gives the song an edge. Laughed when I saw "ho-ly" haha I so have to use that...

It took me a long time to realize what I was doing, but I just figured out that every morning I try to listen to every Diru song. I'll be listening to my ipod from the second I wake up to the very last second before the teacher gets mad.

I spent my weekend watching an auction for Kyo's second poem book. With one day left, the price was 75$ US. With about 30 mins left, the price was 327$ US (CDN I don't remember). I was sitting in my chair super upset. I was honestly going to bid for that book. I wanted it so badly. But I lost fair and Square (I didn't even bother placing a bid. No way I can get 300$ in 3 days). I just found it amazing how much it went for. Hopefully someday I'll get the chance to read its words.
