Can I phoenetically write Hiragana/Kanji with my USA laptop

Hi all!

I am learning Japanese while I currently live in Japan. At work my Japanese laptop has a button that will allow phonetic spellings of Japanese characters. Is this available for my American Windows Vista machine??
