Best Kurosawa movie?

I've seen Seven Samurai, Heaven & Hell, Kagemusha, Throne of Blood, Ran, Dreams, Dersu Uzala, Ikiru, Rhapsody in August, and a couple of others.

I love kurosawa movies. My favorite movie of all time is Yojimbo. you should see it if you haven't. High and Low is another favorite. I think it's the best crime thriller I've seen.

The man was a genius. I've seen all of his movies I think. Even with my limited attention span they lose nothing from repeated viewings.

I have merged the threads, and changed some of the posts so that it would fit nicely into this thread, hope you don't mind.

I have only seen "Seven samurai" and I think it is brilliant!

I couldn't even bring myself to finishing Seven Samurai yet. I have to get around to that one day. Besides that, I've heard a lot of good about Rashômon. Well, one of these days, when I find the time to watch a movie at leisure...

I haven't gotten around to seeing all of his movies, I've seen personally, Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru (The bad sleep well), Maadadayo (spelled madadayo in English), as well as Yume (Dreams...)...

I would definitely recomend the Hamlet-inspired Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru, as well as Maadadayo (as long as you can excuse the fact that the movie is basically one big homage to by Kurosawa to himself), Dreams is made up of many different stories apparently based on the dreams of the director himeself, some work, others not so much, but it can have many different moments of beauty like much of Kurosawa's work.

Other films that are most likely to be mentioned when speaking of Kurosawa's most important work are...

Kakushi-toride no san-akunin (Hidden Fortress)
Rashouman (English title: Rashoman)
Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai)
Ran
Kagemusha
& Yojimbo.

He's also (uncredited) for the filming of the Japanese segments of the seminal film, Tora! Tora! Tora!... Tora! Tora! Tora! is a bit like reading a history book, you get to know what happened, but not a full understanding of why. The movie is practically devoid of emotion.

Still, it's fourthousand times better than the Ben Affleck vehicle movie "Pearl Harbor", so I guess you can choose your poison there.

Ran is based on Shakespeares King Lear. Read King Lear and you will see the arguments between the sisters.
I keep thinking about the next one to buy, either Red Beard or Ikuru

Well, I've only seen Seven Samurai (the inspiration for The Magnificent Seven), Yojimbo and Ran. Not a loser in the bunch to say the least!

Yoijmbo is good.
and seven samurai(yup its even better than the magnificent seven) is also good.
and the movie who was the inspiration for Star Wars(The Hidden Fortress) is also good.

I've seen most Kurosawa films. The best is to my mind: Seven Samurai, but a close second must be Rashomon. Actually I would put both among the top-10 best films ever made!
The Internet Movie Database ransks several of Kurosawas films among the 250 best films made ever:
9 - Shichinin no samurai (Seven Samurai)
65 - Rashomon (In the Woods)
124 - Yojimbo (The Bodyguard)
220 - Tengoku to jigoku (High and Low)
224 - Kumonosu jo (Throne of Blood)

Ikiru used to be ranked around 120, but for some reason it is now not on the list. Dersu Uzula should also rank around 120, but so far too few woted in order to make the ranking count.

However, I would suggest that this list could guide anyone who wants to see the best Kurosawa films.

does ''Kairo'' 回路 be a kurosawa's film?
i know that the novel was written by kurosawa kyoshi...

If you really like Kurosawa's films (and who doesn't) be sure and read the book "WAITING ON THE WEATHER Making Movies with Akira Kurosawa" by Teruyo Nogumi who was his script supervisor and loyal assistant for almost 50 years. A simply wonderful enlightening read.

Different Kurosawa entirely, though he's a pretty enjoyable horror genre director..

Kairo (Pulse), Bright Future, Cure, & Charisma are some of his more well known movies.
