FF has lost much of it's appeal to me over the years. Convoluted storylines, archetypical characters, and dime-a-dozen cliche's coupled with an increasing emphasis on style over substance (eyecandy) makes for a very formulaic brand of rpg imo. Don't get me wrong, I love the games as much as the next guy but they really need to break the mold, reinvent the wheel, do something to make it fresh again/stand out from other rpgs. This from a guy who has played every version available. 8-p
I always enjoyed playing FF, even though I was never able to make it true the end. I love the characters, and the small movies they have in it. It would be very pleasant to play the game again.
Series? Difficult as different series have their own masterpieces and failures. Some more than others, but still difficult.
Kingdom Hearts has incredible depth. But it's funny to put it on it's own as it's really a Final Fantasy spinoff. And even if judging the spinoff separately from Final Fantasy, there have only been three games released so far. Three are coming...but just that...coming.
What little Kingdom Hearts has released so far has been solid. Wonderful depth, better than any of the recent final fantasies. I love the KH games...possibly equally as much as Final Fantasy IV, my favorite final fantasy game and Chrono Trigger.
My only criticism of Kingdom Hearts is it's a bit overly Disney and not enough Square. Nothing against Disney being in the mixture, it wouldn't be Kingdom Hearts if it weren't filled with Disney. And I happen to love certain Disney worlds, like the Tron world, the Nightmare Before Christmas World, the Beauty and the Beast World, the Pirates of the Caribbean World, the Mickey Mouse world...they are some of my favorites. I grew up on Disney so the mixture is a dream come true. But the Disney seems to overshadow the Square stuff a bit much.
II, was even more darker and more epic than the previous one. Which was pretty great, something I was hoping for. But the cost was that areas were smaller and the game was shorter. :/
But other than that nothing I can criticize really. How odd that Final Fantasy has become a shell of it's former self. And that vitality...the supreme spirit that Final Fantasy had has now exists quite fully in the realm of kingdom hearts.
Final Fantasy IV is the greatest Final Fantasy ever made. VI is good as well. There are elements of VII which are actually better than VI. But the overall world of VI is more interesting than VII. Final Fantasy has been going downhill ever since IV. XII didn't even feel like a Final Fantasy. Really the only game since they abandoned Nintendo that's felt like a Final Fantasy is IX.
When I first got a Gameboy Advance I got a Golden Sun and play a bit of that. There was a them that reminded me of the Crystals, which is good. And it had the old-school RPG feel which can be good, supreme if done right. But it still felt generic.
I've only played the first Wild Arms game. Even though the graphics did not reflect at all what the Playstation was capable of, it was a fascinating game. A fun play, but far from the best.
I would call the Chrono series the best were Chrono Cross not such a downfall. Chrono Trigger is my most favorite game of all time. Chrono Cross was no Chrono Trigger though. The overall game play was not good. The soundtrack was a masterpiece. The storyline of Chrono Cross was an interesting follow up, but the characters were not as interesting. Chrono Trigger was a fantastic adventure but Chrono Cross was like nap on the beach.
I've played some of the Breath of Fire games, they were LAME.
Zelda is pretty good. I could rate it better if I had more experience with it. The themes of a Link to the Past were great. For a super Nintendo action game it was quite amazing. As far as replay...now that I'm not stuck with an SNES...I would not play link to the past again. Does not detract from the fact it is the best action RPG for the SNES. Actually, scratch that, I think I like Seiken Densetsu III better. Link to the Past came before that though, making Link to the Past the reigning influential king of all action-rpgs. Ocarina of Time on the other hand, I would definitely play again. It is a masterpiece. I've only played a little of Majora's mask, but I didn't like it quite as much as Ocarina no Toki. I don't know about the newer games, and if they have fallen or not. Oh hey wow, I forgot that Kingdom Hearts is Action-Adventure too, and so is Okami. Zelda is the Godfather of all Action-RPG. Action-RPG is good thanks to Zelda, and it hold a mighty place in my heart, but I like what it gave birth to better. Stuff like Kingdom Hearts and Seiken Densetsu III.
Dragon Quest stinks. There are some good elements in it like every RPG has, but other than that big thumbs down. I don't have any experience with it other than watching videos of the older ones on youtube and playing VIII for the ps2, but VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is painfully bland. I must note that the soundtrack was just awful, I just loathed every random battle because the monsters were lame and the battle music was the worst battle music I ever remember hearing.
Seiken Densetsu AKA Secret of Mana is spectacular. One and two weren't so great, but Seiken Densetsu III was a masterpiece, just fantastic. And the following games have been pretty good too.
Pokemon was the first good RPG the gameboy had. But after you so firmly established a certain 150 pokemon and one piece of land, it's hard to expand. After gold and silver I just really gave up.
I've never played Arc the Lad or Shadow Hearts, but Shadow Hearts looks interesting.
.hack has an interesting concept. Of getting stuck in a video game. But that's all it has going for it. .hack as a video game is incredibly boring.
Brave Fencer Musashi was above average, but Samurai legends was bland and corny.
I've never played Blue Dragon, but it doesn't look very good. Blue Dragon already fails in the area of flora and fauna in my book.
Dark Cloud stinks. Level-5 just can't make good games.
I've never played a non-Japanese RPG that I liked.
Hmmm...after all this..I really can't put on series as the king. All have fallen short in ways and many have excelled almost equally.
Haha my favorite is probably Chrono Cross...
I have to disagree you on the issue of Final Fantasy. Its true that Final Fantasy is probably living its decadent age, but, in my opinion it started with FF IX, and im glad Squaresoft left Nintendo behind, after all Nintendo wanted to rip FF content apart, it was almost like an Evil Overlord of Fiery Censorship. Also, you can't disagree that FF VII and VIII have amazing depth as well, sure you don't find them as amazing, but if something, than those two games can't be branded shallow.
I'm not sure if anybody's already said this, but the closest anybody can get to naming "the best RPG ever" is personal preference. I mean that everyone likes different stuff, and opinions are always changing from person to person.
It didn't get a lot of publicity because it was released during the Dreamcast's dying days (although later ported to GameCube), but it's a great game. Definitely recommend it.
I know I missed a lot of series from the poll - for me now the most glaring omission is Shin Megami Tensei.
I'm not sure anyone's mentioned those, but they're damn good games. Each one is similar enough that you know it's Megaten, but they do try to vary them significantly.
I've been playing Persona 3 for months now, clocked around 150 hours on it so far. Although it's rather repetitive it's still keeping me interested. I like the way it combines sim elements of building social networks with dungeon crawling - although each aspect is distinct, they affect each other in a convincing way.
Unlike most RPGs, this one isn't set in a medieval, fantasy or sci-fi setting. It's based in modern Japan, in a more-or-less real world setting. There are lots of little references to Japanese culture, nice for all you Japanophiles out there.
Basically, you play a high school kid who goes through normal days at school, followed by a period in which to build social networks. This can be eating ramen with a classmate, talking to an old couple who run a bookstore, playing in the park with a primary school kid. As you get to know these various friends you build social links, which are based on Tarot Cards. For example, your link with the classmate is represented by the Magician Arcana.
Midnight is time for dungeon crawling. As with previous Megaten games, you can summon monsters - Persona - to fight with you. Initially these are won as battle spoils, but you can fuse them to create new, more powerful Persona. Here's where the social links come in. Each Persona has an affinity for one of the Arcana. The higher the level of the social link, the greater the exp bonus when fusing a Persona of that Arcana, so the Persona can level up and learn new skills as it's created.
Likewise, when building social links you are more likely to level up that link if you're carrying a Persona of that friend's Arcana.
If you can cope with the repetitive cycle of school--socialising--dungeon-crawling, this game has a lot to recommend it. Authentic anime graphics, cool Japanese setting, realistic teenage characters and cool monsters from mythology. 9/10
Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, and even rubbish like Zelda got votes, but not Breath of Fire... why the hell?
I mean, yeah I love FF as well, and its my favorite among the listed ones, but still Im sure that half of the chaps voted for it never actually played BoF.
My favourite is Terranigma for the SNES. This was great(story, character, atmosphere). But it was only a single game... so my favourite RGP series is Final Fantasy.
It may be a bit fanboyish, but I do love the FF series, even a lot of the newer ones. My favorites are probably 3, 4, 8, 10, and 12. In fact, FF4 was my first RPG. 8 may be a little "weird" and on the easy side, but I love the music, story, and especially Triple Triad. I love the original somewhat, but FF3 took it and improved upon it greatly. FF10... can't even explain why I love it. Maybe it's the sphere grid, maybe it's that it has some of the greatest music in the entire series, but I love it. FF12 is just fast-paced, challenging, and addicting and even though the story and music are very bland, the gameplay just keeps me playing.
Other than FF, I also like the SaGa (Final Fantasy Legend in NA) series, Nippon Ichi games (i.e. Disgaea), and recently Dragon Quest.
Indeed. For Pete's sake, Dragon Quest was the game that is the grandfather of all console RPGs, and it's not on the list either. There's even a law that says Dragon Quest games can only be released on Sunday for fear that kids would skip school otherwise. I didn't think much of it either, but I played through all of DQ1 in one weekend, and then through 2-4, and other than 2 (which is agreed by many to be the low point of the series), I enjoyed them. I'm playing through DQ5 now. While not for everyone, they are hugely popular in Japan.
