WAIR - That's what I dislike most about the anime, the people who have only seen the anime miss out on all the cool characters (like Ling, Ran-Fan, and Mei) or events (Like the stuff with Barry and Marco, won't spoil it for people though.)

Fullmetal Alchemist fanboyism should really be banned. To be honest, I watched Fullmetal Alchemist as it was coming out and being subbed (more than an year ago, as far as I recall). It's disappointing at how cliche and popular it has become.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a good anime indeed, but what really makes it stand out is probably that it's good, regardless of having 51 episodes. Most animes stick with 26 episodes, and manage to unravel an interesting plot with that amount and (not so often) conclude it properly. Fullmetal Alchemist managed to present an interesting story in 51 episodes.

What Fullmetal Alchemist seems to portray pretty well, is the whole shocking/traumatic moments as a new hidden truth is unveiled. Hence, I'd categorize it as a good action-drama anime.

Also, I'd like to say that Fullmetal Alchemist while undoubtely being a good anime, it's got too much fanboyism around as of late, and therefore jumping on the "I LOVE FMA" bandwagon makes it a dangerously could-be-overrated anime.

And while I like FMA and uphold it as a good anime, I'd like to say the ending -just like many animes- was terribly open-ended and I'd have rather have had 10 more episodes than wait an year for a conclusion (Conqueror of Shambala) when the FMA feeling (for me) had already faded.

Lastly, to the person that kindly suggested the concept of "MANGA > ANIME", I'd like to point out that I fail to see how a colorless, motionless, musicless voiceless drawing can better convey anything as opposed to the anime.

The fandom does get very shallow, and that's the worst thing about the entire series. I also agree that it does go above and beyond just about any other anime I've ever seen for plotlines and emotion. The drama and emotion displayed in both manga and anime is something rarely seen in anything classified as "action." I didn't start watching it until one of my friends showed it to me probably a year or so ago and I've watched the rest on my own whenever I could.
As for Manga > Anime, they take completely different paths after certain points. There's no exact point where they take different routes, because some parts split earlier than others. The idea of the manga being better than the anime is based mostly on the differences between the two, rather than the portrayal, in my opinion. The manga and anime have completely different concepts for homunculi, different characters for the sins, and different details in their plotlines, though they both follow the same basic concept.

I apologize. When I presented my idea regarding "Manga > Anime" I did not single it out to FMA alone; in other words, I was talking about manga and anime overall (perhaps I should've made another topic for that). I am aware that usually manga and anime differ from each other, specially in plot lines, as the example pointed out by Aiiro-Bara.

:sorry: I apologize for assuming that was what you meant, but it is a personal preferance. Often people get attatched to the first style of a series that they see, other times they get so used to a certain style that it's hard to understand why people like the other. I have several friends who don't get why I prefer manga over anime, but, like I said, it's a personal preferance. Most of the time the reason is because they differ slightly and that the anime is usually made after the manga. A lot of people who prefer manga feel that the manga better conveys the plot and the intentions of the artist without tampering to make it fit into a thirty-minute slot or to make it work in a show.

It just has such a good plot/story line, and the art and animation is all done really well.

I love this series. Seen every episode and the movie in Japanese (subbed, of course ) and English. Not sure which version I like better.
I can't afford the manga (the DVDS were expensive!!)....yet. I hope to be able to soon.

It's partially dead because there's nobody left here. I still pay attention to see if anyone's here though. At times.
It's rather hard not to love this series if you like the genre, whatever that is. ☝ I'm not sure what to classify FMA as. Sci-fi/historical/drama/action-adventure and something else? Or am I just kinda loopy?
I did that too, watch everything and see the movie, but I watched my friend's DVDs. I'm partial to the Japanese, though the English voice actors did quite a good job. Four months until I get to meet Vic. He's going to be at Sakura-con.
The manga is different from the anime, but I'm not quite sure where they divided in story line. If I remember correctly it wasn't too long after Huges died.

Neither but both is best, in my opinion.

Seattle has a lot of conventions. And I'm close enough to Vancouver to go to Anime Evolution in the summer/fall so I'm pretty lucky though it means ridiculous amounts of sewing and preparing. As well as too much money spent on fabric for cosplay. I have two for this upcoming April and either two or three for August/September that I need to work on.

I'm not sure whether to be scared of where you live or tell you its alright. Sci-fi fans sort of scare me, but so do a number of anime/j-rock/j-pop fans you find at anime conventions. Where is that, by the way? I can see if I can find the nearest anime convention.

You're welcome. I know I'll be there the whole weekend in J-rock cosplay (Cage!Toshiya of Dir en Grey on Saturday, and Indies!Shin of Kagrra, on Sunday) but there were so many Eds there last year it was almost ridiculous. And the homonculi. I think I saw more Anime!Sloths than I saw Winrys or Roys. ☝ But I might just have not been paying attention.

MetalRoke: It's not that hard, if you take it slowly at first. Though, it wouldn't be reccomended to go from simple patterns to extravagant free-hand designs. You need a certain amount of knowledge about what you're doing and confidence in your skills.

Mycernius: That's how I watched some things, mostly if I got impatient waiting between episodes on tv or fed up with the English voice acting. It's quite useful and I know I probably won't buy the DVDs because they're generally overpriced for what one gets as well as I found that I get a smidge annoyed watching the episodes several times. It brought about a new respect for the manga.

Kala: Isn't it beautiful? From what I gather, not many people were fond of the ending, but I like it. It could have been better, but I enjoyed it. Congratulations on finally seeing it!

Has anyone read the latest chapters (63-64) of the manga? *wants to discuss it*
