＜動詞＞ and 取り＜動詞＞: how different?

There are a number of verbs that are often appended to other verbs and I can't ascertain what nuance it adds. Take 取る, for example: 扱う and 取り扱う, 囲む and 取り囲む--I'm not sure what's different between these pairs of words. What nuance does 取る add? (There's another verb like 取り- but I'm drawing a blank.)

There are definately many 持つ と 帰る 持ち帰る。 I think alot of these verbs are intended to adjoin more than one action.
持ち帰る Basically means take out. Take food home. Carry = 持つ Return home 帰る

持ち上げる To pick up

連れて来る ＝ To take/bring a person along.

来てくれる

Although in your examples, it seems 取る is added but doesn't change the meaning.

I think of these verbs as the Japanese equivalent to English's phrasal verbs, like "cut off", or "get out", "put on", "leave off" etc. Basically they're compound verbs that take certain meanings from each of the individual verbs to form a word with a slight nuanced meaning.

Here are some examples:
かむ (bight) + 切る (cut) = かみ切る (bight off)
立つ (stand) + 上がる (rise) = 立ち上がる (stand up)
食べる (eat) + 始める (start) = 食べ始める (start to eat)
見る (see) + 飽きる (get tired of) = 見飽きる (get tired of watching)
取る (take) + 付ける (attach) = 取り付ける (put on/install)

Thanks for the excellent comments and apologies for the time it's taken for me to reply. Indeed, I understand about most combined verbs but there are some pairs, like 取り囲む／囲む, that seem so similar in meaning that one must wonder about the difference. Due to the information presented in these posts, however, I believe I have a much better idea of what's going on (and how to look up such things in the future). Many thanks to all!
