同じ usage

Hello. So, I'm using the Japanese Core 2000 Anki deck to study some combination vocabulary and grammar, and I'm not completely confident in my understanding of the usage of 同じ. The sentence is 彼の日本語のレベルは私と同じ位だ。 From the example sentences I've looked at using 同じ, I would expect to want to use 私のと, since it's comparing his Japanese level to mine, not his Japanese level to me. Is it possible to drop the の particle in this case because it's obvious from context that it'd be talking about my Japanese level, not me (and if so, is this a common occurrence)? And if so, can の be dropped in other such situations?

It's interpreted as 彼の日本語のレベルは私と同じ位のレベルだ. 私のと同じ位だ is also correct, of course.

So in that case, what would be the reason that the のレベル is after 位 instead of 私?

"A is the same level as B(同じレベルだ)" vs "The level of A and the level of B are the same(レベルは同じだ)."

FYI, の is the pronoun to represent レベル in 私のと同じ位だ, not the particle.

Now the の before レベル disappeared..

From what I understand from trying to look at example sentences, in AはBと同じだ type sentences, A and B are the same thing (Another example sentence from looking up 同じ in a dictionary being 私のカメラは君のと同じだ, implying 君のカメラ). In this case, 彼の日本語のレベル and 私 aren't the same thing, so, based on that example sentence that is saying the same thing except about cameras instead of levels, I would expect to see 私のレベル in some form.

同じ位のレベル vs 同じレベル
の is associated with 位 since it's treated as a noun. 同じ is an adjective, as you would know, therefore の is unnecessary.

彼の日本語のレベル is not compared to 私 in 彼の日本語のレベルは私と同じ位だ. 私と同じ位 represents 私と同じ位のレベル, as I wrote.
Here's another example.
彼の優しさは私と同じくらいだ。
In this case, 私のと is understandable, but sounds awkward since 優しさ is not belongings/possessions but characteristics.
