どうして v. なんで v. なぜ

Is there a difference between these?

I heard once that 何故（なぜ） is more forceful and impolite. I am not sure about the other two though...

Example sentences:
どうして彼が洗濯したかしら．．．
何故そのホテルで泊まったの？
なんで寝ってるな。

なんで is colloquial, but they have basically the same meaning when used as "why".
どうして also can mean "how"; どうして開ければいいのかわからない（＝ どうやって開ければいいのかわからない） "I don't know how to open it". Furthermore, なんで can indicate the means; なんで（＝なにで）払いますか？現金ですか？カードですか？

Ah, thank you for the clarification! I will safely assume that what I heard about 何故 is correct then.

Another difference is that I've only ever heard the following phrase
なぜなら、

And never these
なんでなら
どうしてなら
