Hi,

1. 二人が驚いて振り向くと、「変身術」の先生でグリフィンドールの寮監、マクゴナガル先生が、生徒たちの頭越しに向こうのほうから呼んでいた。

Is the meaning of the highlighted part:

(マクゴナガル先生は)「変身術」の先生だった

with だった changed to で for continuity with what follows?

I know these are similar question to what I've asked before. I'm still not very confident with these patterns.

2. Next sentence:

厳格な顔をした先生で、髪をきつちりと髷に結い、四角い縁のメガネの奥に鋭い目があった。

Does this mean:

(マクゴナガル先生は)厳格な顔をした先生だった

and then

(マクゴナガル先生は)髪をきつちりと髷に結い ... etc.

?

3. マクゴナガル先生はなぜか、自分が悪いことをしたに違いないという気持ちにさせる。

I don't understand this use of にさせる. With させる, I thought that に marked the causee??

4. 気絶したのか、何だったのかは別にして、それだけでも十分恥ずかしいのに、みんなが大騒ぎするなんて。

a) Does それ refer to 気絶したのか、何だったのか?

b) In this case, does に mean something like "in addition to"?

1)
Yes.

Do you have any idea of the function of で other than the -te form of copula here?

2)
Right.

ちり, not きつちり

3)
私が買う。
私: doer

彼が私に買わせる。
彼: causer 私: causee/actual doer

悪いことをした気がする。
彼が悪いことをした気にさせる。

気/気持ち is not the doer, but grammatically it's treated as it is so.

4) a)
the event/accident/happening that is described as 気絶したのか、何だったのか

b)
のに for adversative conjunction

Thanks,

1) In answer to your question, no.

4b) Is のに literally constructed from "nominaliser + に", with に in a sense that can very generally be thought of as "in addition to", or is this interpretation my invention?

4)
Are you talking about this に?
Yes, something like that. I understand the nuance of のに, but I was thinking more of the etymology. Do you think of のに as being composed of の + に, or does it seem like an indivisible word?

のに is originaly from "nominaliser の + conjunctive particle に".

のに
[接助]《準体助詞「の」+接続助詞「に」から》

のに[接助終助]の意味 - 国語辞書 - goo辞書

に without の can have the same meaning in classical Japanese, since any nominalizer is not needed.

に[格助接助終助並助]の意味 - 国語辞書 - goo辞書

However, this conjunctive particle に is from case particle に which indicates the reason/cause/clue.

に[格助接助終助並助]の意味 - 国語辞書 - goo辞書

So, "nominaliser の + case particle に" is not wrong.
