ででもある / 後ずさりした

1. ペティグリューは、ハリーが頷いたことが自分の死刑宣告ででもあるかのように、 ガックリと膝をついた。

I am having difficulty seeing why it is ででもある and not just でもある.


2. ブラックが蹴飛ばそうと足を振ると、ペティグリューは後ずさりした。

Why would one use the "stem + する" pattern (in this case 後ずさりした) and not just the ordinary verb (in this case 後ずさった)? I am somewhat familiar with this pattern, but I have never really understood the difference (unless I understood it once and then forgot!).

The most possible interpretation is ハリーが死刑宣告で頷いた "Harry nodded to express that that(= Harry's nod) was a death sentence", but I think it might be just the translator's typo/mistranslation of 死刑宣告でもある.

2)
後ずさり is indeed from the -masu stem of 後ずさる, but the original verb 後ずさる is not so commonly used nowadays. The noun form 後ずさり is more common, therefore 後ずさりした is used there. (Thus, 後ずさった can be used instead of 後ずさりした.)

2) Are there any cases where "stem (noun) + する" and "plain verb" are both in common use? In those cases, are there any generally-applying differences in meaning or usage?

or
ペティグリューは、ハリーが自分の死刑宣告で頷いたかのように

But ペティグリューは、ハリーが頷いたことが自分の死刑宣告でもあるかのように is the most possible one, I believe.

見聞きする / 見聞く
振り遅れする / 振り遅れる
売り惜しみする / 売り惜しむ
取り調べする / 取り調べる

Hmm, what I can think of now are all compound verbs. In fact, 後ずさる is also made of "後 + a verb すさる（退る）".
These words are the same both in meaning and usage in most cases. 見聞く might be a bit uncommon than 見聞きする, similar to 後ずさる / 後ずさりする.
