Hi
1. あの、食事時間じゃない時に誰かの家に行ってもそうだ し、他に、そうですね、例えば、昔お世話になった大学 時代の先生の研究室についでがあるからご挨拶に行く、 ・・・
My translation: "Um, (you can also take a present when) you go to someone's home other than for a meal, and also, um, for example, if you get a chance to visit the office of a teacher who helped you in your old student days, and you go to greet him/her..."
a) Is そうだし = そうだ + し ("and besides")?
b) Is there some implied verb in 研究室についで that gives a sense like "chance to visit the office"? (I'm assuming についで = に + 序で, but I'm not even certain about that.)
2. The speaker has just been asked if it's OK to give home-made biscuits as a 手土産.
私だったらそれはとても嬉しいし、喜んで下さる方はた くさんいらっしゃるでしょうけど、・・・
I understand 私だったらそれはとても嬉しいし, but I cannot make any sense of the next part.
3. 一件あたりの贈り物は3000円~5000円。
I gather this essentially means each gift costs between 3000 and 5000 yen, but what does あたり mean here?
4. What does のり類 mean? Apparently it's something that could be given as a gift, but I cannot seem to find it in the dictionary.
5. The speaker has been told by his work colleagues that they give お中元 to 課長 and 部長. Then he says:
そうか。やっぱりあげるものなんですね。
I don't understand the point of this sentence. What is it saying?
