On Wednesday, tsunami waves reaching up to 60 centimetres struck parts of Japan's Pacific coastline following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake that occurred earlier that morning off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. The Japan Meteorological Agency maintained its evacuation warning, which remained in effect for a vast stretch of the coast, from Hokkaido in the north to Wakayama Prefecture in the west.
The warning caused significant disruption to coastal rail, road, and air travel. In response to the situation, the operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant temporarily halted the discharge of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. The weather agency had earlier warned of the possibility of tsunami waves up to 3 metres high. So far, the most significant waves observed were 60-centimetre surges recorded shortly after 13:00 in Hamanaka, Hokkaido, and at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. A 20-centimetre wave also reached Tokyo's Harumi waterfront area.
