Japan experienced its warmest autumn on record, with temperatures 1.97°C above average. This unprecedented warmth has significantly delayed the country's renowned autumn foliage season. Tokyo, Nagoya, and Sapporo recorded above-average temperatures, with Tokyo experiencing a 2.4°C increase. As a result, the vibrant autumn colours that typically draw tourists to Japan have been delayed. Kyoto 's famous illuminated maple tree trains have extended their operating hours to accommodate the later foliage season. The Japan Meteorological Corporation predicts peak foliage viewing times for Tokyo and Osaka will be later than usual.

Japan recorded its joint-hottest summer on record this year as extreme heatwaves, which scientists say are fueled by climate change, engulfed many parts of the world. The famous snowcap of Mount Fuji was absent for the most extended recorded period this year, not appearing until early November, compared with the average of early October.




In November, a series of unusual weather events, including the simultaneous formation of four typhoons, occurred due to a combination of factors. One key factor was the meandering of trade winds, which created a counterclockwise wind pattern conducive to typhoon development. While this phenomenon is not uncommon, it was particularly pronounced in November, leading to the simultaneous formation of multiple typhoons.

Another contributing factor was the unusually high sea surface temperatures. These elevated temperatures increased atmospheric moisture, making heavy rainfall more likely. The combination of these factors resulted in a highly unusual and impactful weather pattern, highlighting the potential consequences of climate change.



This afternoon, the temperature here was a balmy 19°C, with splendid sunshine. It was the first time I'd cycled in shorts in December.
