I worked with 3D AutoCad (2007) about 7 years and with Catia engineering software about 2 years and with Rhinoceros 3 months! These are the pictures of some of my works:

A golden ring. I designed it with Rhinoceros a few weeks before, based on an Iranian traditional jewelry

(Ohhh... gold! I wish, I had a lot of this yellow metal, then I could exchange them to money and traveled to Japan to visit its beautiful landscapes ) lol

Gold again! Rhinoceros a week ago. I don't like this one because it has a little failure and is simple either, but I love its weight! lol

Very nice. I just ordered a 3D printer after having never used one. I figured it will be good thing for me and my kids to experiment with together.

A good decision, mdchachi :)

Nowadays, 3D printer can be a necessary device for researches, scientists, inventors, designers and those who are interested in technical works. Despite I worked with the various engineering software, but have never seen a 3D printer closely yet, though know how they work. Of course this type of printers and also CNC machines need some programs to make a real object. Surely, 3D printers are connected to the engineering software or direct programing to be fed.
Catia, solidworks, Ansis and Rhinoceros are among the famous and developed industrial software that can create some functional files with particular formats to operate a 3D printer to make the same designed object in a real shape with materials. Of course there are some other infamous and particular engineering software that are used by some companies and corporations exclusively which I'm not familiar with. Nonetheless Catia is one of the engineering software that is in the highest rank in the industrial world.

However, a 3D printers dependent on its development, not only is a useful and necessary tools for experts but also can be used as an educational and experimental devices for students and kids who build the future.

Based on your comment, probably you know the designing software and systems, and most likely have a specialty in engineering and designing?

My background is software but I'm assuming that the technology has advanced enough for hobbyists to use. I haven't looked into what software to use yet. The printer I ordered based on advice from a friend is the PRUSA MKS3S . There is a large user community so if I have problems it should be easy to get help.

Cool stuff! I like the ring, and your autocad work. Is that a backpack for deploying a spool of cable?

I played with some modeling and animation back in high school, namely with Lightwave and 3D Studio MAX, and a bit of Maya. I really regret not sticking with it and getting more into the CAD stuff, it's really fascinating!

Here are some lightwave images I still have after all these years. I made these in like... 1998? A time bomb

and a volumetric explosion. I think there was an animation of the bomb going off but I'm not sure if I still have a copy of it:

Lately I haven't done much 3D stuff on the computer, though I have played a bit with sketchup. I have been playing with the free version of Shapr3D on my ipad, which is pretty cool but I'm still not very efficient with it. The free version is really limited, but I have been taking measurements and modeling my friends' houseboats to help them with their remodels:

The 3D printer seems to be a good choice for beginning and can build the objects acceptably. It is not very expensive and complex to be hard for working and training, especially that your education is software.

I'm interested to see the first things that you print with that, but I hope they are not similar to this

Hi, nice gaihin

I,m glad found an expert designer like you here!

But the difference between you and me is that you are interested in action games and animation and I tend to industrial designs instead. So the software you choose is different with mine. I worked with 3D max for a while previously, but usually the output of this software is not appropriate for accurate engineering and industrial plans. Due this shortcoming I left it earlier, though it is an excellent software for gaming and animation or the shaping that can show the final 3D figure of an engineering design imaginably.

Fortunately, the format of the output files of 3D max, Catia, AutoCad, Rhino and so on, can be converted to be usable from one software to another, nevertheless the main difference between 3D max with engineering software is consideration of accurate dimensions that can be read by machines for prototyping. Basically, 3D max mostly is used for animating and gaming not for planning a part of a car based on engineering rules.

Thanks @Mansoor, yeah I was originally more into using those programs for special effects and movie magic, it wasn't even until I was in college that I learned about the more practical applications for 3D design and CAD software, but I've never been good at engineering and I was already in a design program at that point, so I focused more on graphics, photography, vector design and some packaging stuff.

Nowadays I have a laser engraver so I can cut and engrave a variety of materials. I've been working on some earring/pendant designs with wood or acrylic, and I also engrave the leather covers for my notebooks: Roughneck Notebooks (@roughnecknotebooks) profile on Instagram • 26 posts

My brother has a 3D printer and we've made some cool things with it, like lithophanes out of photographs. It's really neat, especially for prototyping, but it's so slow it's not very useful for production at scale...

Lately with the COVID stuff happening, I've been making comfort clips for my nurse friends so they don't have to hook their face masks onto their ears (they get friction burns on their ears from wearing the masks all day). You can see them in the most recent couple posts on the instagram link above. the curly clear ones I cut out of acrylic with the laser, and the thin white ones my brother 3D printed.

Wow Mansoor you are quite the artist. I used to work as a designer and now planning for a heated build chamber printer.

I designed these parts about 5 years ago with AutoCad 2007. I can't explain about their usage or show their other parts because of copyright in the non fence internet. in fact those are some of my innovations.

Hi nice gaigin, nice job

As I understood before from your shaping you are a talented designer. Now, working with laser cutter and engraver was added to your proficiency- thanks

Excuse me that I sent a post before I reply your comment. I prepared the above pictures last night, then decided not to post them but they were saved in the thread and this noon which I woke up I changed my decision and did post them.

However, You are offering your skills in business and market but I was not successful in this aspect. I most often am at home (even before Corona virus) and don't contact people or companies anymore. I also haven't any machine like 3D printer or laser cutter to work with and produce somethings to enter the business world practically. I just design and design one after another without offer them anywhere. You may know it is about 3 or dour years that I joined Japan Forums but never spoke about my designing skills, I'm so in Iran as well and don't like to offer my projects anywhere, because on one hand The Iranian companies and factories go their iwn way for manufacturing their previous customary productions and pay no attention to the new inventions and inventors anymore, so dealing with them seems troublesome for me.

My only action for entering the business background is that, I joined a few Iranian freelance websites and sent some of my designing as the work samples and showing my abilities, but sadly my bank card has been expired and actually I'm not patient to refer to the bank to renew it. Bank card is necessary for paying the monthly membership fee to the websites to allow you to receive a work. It also is necessary for receiving the wage of a work after doing it. I participated in the freelance webs as a translator and designer but have not received any work among a lot of other freelancers (who grasp the new works immediately in compare with a slow and uninterested person like me) due to the problem that I mentioned.

Doesn't laser engraver affect the transparency of acrylic?

I think you may love these objects. I designed them by Rhinoceros that learned it recently during one week, due to my experience in AutoCad and CAtia. I designed them last month. I didn't complete the vase and just worked for engraving the flowers on that. It was among my first exercises that I even didn't apply any material to.

The gem on the ring can be made from red acrylic by laser cutter easily

Wow Mansoor you are quite the artist. I used to work as a designer and now planning for a heated build chamber printer.

You made me confident with your graceful admiration, thank you a bunch :)

I also am happy meet another designer here. A designer needs three things; talent ( a potential ability of imagination), interest, knowledge and enough experience (oh it became four things!) and I think we three designers, nice gaijin, you and me have the same position (if another designer is not found here later).

Of course nice gaijin and me introduced ourselves a little in designing, but I don't know how do you work? Based on your comment it seems you have a high ability that want to design a particular printer which I haven't heard its name up to now. Is it an innovation or you want to follow an existing one? Probably you have a good experience in the industrial designing?

I have to explain something. Rhinoceros has some additional plugins among for jewelry. I didn't use them but made the golden objects with Rhino software itself that was more difficult. Of course I tried to install some of the plugins to know what those are, but they were not installed on my old computer.

I designed this mouse yesterday with Rhinoceros. It is not a copy of an existing mouse but I designed it myself. I neither used an instruction nor a picture but designed it by myself. It is the first industrial object that I made with Rhino. I designed its interior components (except its electronic board and spool) but those are not visible behind the case.

I think it is similar to a mouse or squirrel with two big eyes. It also is similar to a new Ferrari car
