OK, need a little help here. We have basic cable and I think it cost us about 3200 yen a month. I don't think its worth it. I only watch NHK news (in English). Seems though that the wife just watches regular tv programs. As far as know, we don't have a movie channel or Fox news.
Our tv is one year old. I want to get rid of cable. The dish thing is out of the question since the typhoons here will take it to Mars. Do these new tv's have a built in antenna or can I buy one and hook it up to the tv somehow.
Later I can provide the model and make if necessary.

Thanks.

No.

Probably you are talking about an indoor antenna or something, but I don't recommend it. It differs depending on your environment, but the radio wave field intensity is usually not enough for indoor antennas.

Do you live in an apartment or like that? If so, you usually can receive your local TV stations' terrestrial broadcasting waves without any CATV set-top box. Try to connect the wire (the one from the wall to the set-top box) directly to the TV set, or try to watch the local TV stations' programs via the tuner inside the TV set with using the TV set's original remote control, not the one of the CATV set-top box.

Thanks Tori
Today we went to the edion and I asked the guy. He said I can get 3 channels only. Wife needs to watch channel 8 Fukuoka, but we can't get that with the 3 channels. So we will keep cable. It is the very basic cable for 3200 yen every 2 months. Of course, we get NHK and channel 8 but seems like all the cable channels are selling crap. No movies as far as I know.
I'm going to go over the paper work and see what we can get if we up grade it. If its too expensive, then we just keep the basic and rent movies.

thanks

Does your wife really "NEED" Channel 8?

At 1,600円 a month for cable I am not surprised you do not get any movies, even if you do you will be limited to watching them when they are aired.

Upgrading is one option, the other is to sign up for Netflix, they will offer the first month free.

We are using a J:COM bundle (TV, phone, and internet) with several foreign stations (a few dozens of channels in total) and a lot of bilingual movies and TV series. I love National Geographic, Animal Planet, and BBC documentaries in particular. TV on demand is extra and a tad pricey, but their internet connection is fast with a maximum download speed of 320mbps. We pay ~9,500 JPY/month.

Thanks, actually I know nothing about Netflix. I'll have to check into it.

Thanks Thomas. Although the price is way out of our range, I know the wife won't change the phone service that we have. Phone and computer (and we used to call to the States twice a month) cost us about 6200 yen a month. Cable is 1600 yen a month. I rarely watch TV and if I do it is NHK news at 7 pm.

It's summer time and need to buy that new bicycle. Want to explore Kyushu biking this summer. Sold the scooter so it will be on a bicycle.

Again I ask why will your wife not change the phone service or channel 8 Fukuoka?

If you can save money why does it matter what phone service you use?

Who is the Head of the Family in your home?

I advise you not to listen to this^ advice. Head of the family is such an outdated thought. You're better off not throwing your weight around over something so petty. Netflix is a pretty good option. Honestly, most people I know use streaming services instead of cable or satellite. I'm the only one in my circle who has cable. Which I admittedly dont use because I stream everything. But if your wife must have a certain channel, then what can you do?. .

Channel 8 is her favorite TV program shows.
The phone service which I only know is tied into the wifi service and from what I can tell the price seems to be fair. About 6700 yen a month.
Head of the Family, well, its her country so that answers your question there. Although the meaning of Head of the Family seems to me really only means one thing, and that would be with the National Health Insurance where they want to know who is the Head of the Family, other then that, I don't hear anyone using that term these days, do you?

The Netflix is something I should have her check out. Maybe just what she wants. By the way, can you tell me are the movies in English or just Japanese?

What are your wife's favorite TV shows?

As for Head of the Family I will start a thread about this later.

As for Netflix, content is in both English and Japanese, the first 30 days is free and then you pay monthly and can stop any time with no penalty, there are three subscription plans:-

Basic Plan 800円 monthly for one screen Standard Definition.

Standard Plan 2 screens at a time +HD 1,200円 monthly.

Premium Plan 1,800円, 4 screens at a time +Ultra HD.

800 yen sounds reasonable. I'm really not familiar with Netflix, but I guess it is all movies?

You do not need to spend any money to view Netflix, you can experience everything they have to offer for 30 days
totally FREE and view it on your PC, etc.
