I am having a lot of trouble understanding passive and causative forms, and next week it will get worse because I will have to learn passive causative.
My question is, for the examples below, does it change the verb from intransitive to transitive when used with inanimate objects?
私はハンカチをしめらせた。
I dampen the hanker chief.
チョコレートを凍らせて食べるのが好きだ。
I like to frost chocolate before eating.

No. Those are just the causative form of intransitive verbs. を indicates the causee there (e.g. 彼を行かせた I made him go). There is no problem to use transitive verbs in English translations, though (I made the handkerchief wet with water = I wet the handkerchief with water ).

There are no transitive counterparts for 湿る, 凍る, so, the causative forms take their place.

As a related note, some intransitive verbs don't have the causative form, and the transitive counterpart takes on the role instead. The causative form of the intransitive verb is only used as the potential form of the transitive verb in these verb pairs.
e.g.
動く intransitive
動かす transitive (also has a nuance of causative of intransitive)
動かせる potential of transitive (not causative of intransitive)

乾く-乾かす-乾かせる
減る-減らす-減らせる
照る-照らす-照らせる
沸く-沸かす-沸かせる

The following thread might be helpful (partially Japanese).

I'm sorry, I found 湿す in dictionary, but 私はハンカチをしめした sounds odd to me.
しめ・す【湿す】

水分を少し与える。しめらす。「ガーゼを―・して傷口をふく」「のどを―・す」
筆に墨をつける。転じて、手紙を書く。「一筆―・しまいらせ候」
水でぬらして火を消す。灯火などを消すことにもいう。

動かす transitive (also has a nuance of causative of intransitive)
動かせる potential of transitive (not causative of intransitive)
But we can say 本人の好きなように動かせた方が結局うまくいく

乾く-乾かす-×乾かせる
減る-減らす-×減らせる
照る-照らす-×照らせる
沸く-沸かす-×沸かせる
I think this is because a human being can't dry or shine voluntarily.

I found 湿す in dictionary
I think it's an obsolete word. 湿らす/湿らせる is far more commonly used in that meaning.

we can say 本人の好きなように動かせた方が結局うまくいく
I believe 動かせる doesn't have that usage. (0 hit in a corpus.). Other expressions, for instance 動くようにさせる or 動けるようにする are used instead.

I think this is because a human being can't dry or shine voluntarily.
Inanimate things can be the causee. There is no problem with 水を凍らせる or ハンカチを湿らせる, but 水/湯を沸かせる and ハンカチを乾かせる can't be the causative of 沸く and 乾く, respectively. These are only used as the potential form of transitive 沸かす and 乾かす. That's what I explained.

It's not frequent but it's a possible expression, I think.

動く 動かす 動かせる 人に動かせる
飛ぶ 飛ばす 飛ばせる 人に飛ばせる
滑る 滑らす 滑らせる 人に滑らせる

乾く-乾かす-×乾かせる
減る-減らす-×減らせる
照る-照らす-×照らせる
沸く-沸かす-×沸かせる
So the generalization here (for -asu transitive verbs) is: the verb has the corresponding causative form if it can take an animate causee, it seems to me.

The definition is opposite. It's more likely when a verb that was derived from the causative form can't be considered as the causative form anymore, it is treated as an intransitive verb. This is also applied to other -asu transitive verbs. For instance, 逃がす was from the causative form of a classical verb 逃ぐ. The causative of intransitive 逃げさせる (e.g. 味方に逃げさせる) might be acceptable, but 味方を逃がす would be more common. The same goes to 慣れさせる vs. 慣らす (from 慣る), 濡れさせる vs. 濡らす (from 濡る), 肥えさせる vs. 肥やす (from 肥ゆ), etc..

As for 動かせる, the number of the examples is too few. Those sentences sound awkward to me, and other expressions 動くようにさせる, 動けるようにする, やらせる or させる seem more common and natural.

We are not discussing the history of verbal forms or terminology for them.
飛ばせる and 飛ばす are clearly diffrenent in meaning
飛行機を飛ばす ×飛行機を飛ばせる
飛びたくない人を説得して飛ばせる
×飛びたくない人を説得して飛ばす
飛ばす cannot be used for voluntary action (except in Western dialects where they use such causative forms as 飲ます, 食べさす --- what I called the -asu variants of causatives).
The same applies for 動かす/動かせる, 逃がす/逃げさせる.

I meant
自主的に逃げさせる is OK but 自主的に逃がす is not (in the meaning of 自主的に逃げるように説得する)

Causativization is a general process and there is nothing to prevent it from applying to 動く.
I agree with what toritoribe-san writes in another thread:
「動かす」が「動く」から派生し、自動詞の使役的用法の一部を担うという情報は学習者にとっても有益だと考えます。な | Japan Forum
But it's 「動く」の使役的用法の一部, not 全部.

Yes, of course, but I believe the analysis based on the etymological perspective is useful to understand the function of the word/form (for instance, why 見える performs as the potential of 見る instead of 見られる). The examples I listed, 逃げさせる-逃がす, 慣れさせる-慣らす, 濡れさせる-濡らす, 肥えさせる-肥やす, are all modern Japanese in the first place.

There is a fact that す is/was also a causative auxiliary verb.

Causativization is a general process and there is nothing to prevent it from applying to 動く.
It's too short-sighted to apply modern Japanese conjugations to all verbs automatically with ignoring historical/etymological background (as in 見える vs. 見られる above).

I meant
自主的に逃げさせる is OK but 自主的に逃がす is not (in the meaning of 自主的に逃げるように説得する)
Do you mean 逃がす can't work well for "let/allow" causative cases?

Google search has a well-known bug regarding the number of the search results. It often returns incorrect numbers, so the researchers need to recheck it by clicking the result pages. Furthermore, search results always contain misuses or repetition unavoidably. That's why corpuses are used for proper linguistic researches instead of google search. Here's the correct numbers of each search results. (Note that the results still include repetition.)

I checked the first 10 pages in the google search, and got a result that almost all usages are misuse of the potential 動かせる or the transitive 動かす. Some of them are just meaningless conjugation tables. I can't find any causative usages (at least in the first 10 pages).

From these search results, although examples are not so many, compound auxiliary verbs seem to be relatively widely used. Probably because (さ)せてあげる/くれる/もらう performs as a humble expression as a kind of set phrase.

Sorry for a long post!

Thank you for pointing out the problems in using Google search.
But grammaticality is totally different from frequency. For example, the hit count for 殴らせられる is very low but it no way means it's ungrammatical.
Also, frequency can be influenced by many factors outside grammar including existence of other expression with similar (not necessarily the same) meaning and simpler form (動かす in this case).

There is a fact that す is/was also a causative auxiliary verb.
It was, but the 'is' part depends on the definition of causatives and the dialects in question.

as in 見える vs. 見られる above
I believe the spontaneous verb 見える does not cover the usage of the potential verb 見られる and vice versa (千円で映画が見られる/×見える, 下着が見えてる/×見られてる (not synomymous)). This seems to pararell 動かす/動かせる in a sense, though I don't know what you mean by 見える "performs as the potential of 見る instead of 見られる".

I admit my explanations on animacy and voluntariness was imperfect

the hit count for 殴らせられる is very low but it no way means it's ungrammatical.
Indeed 殴らせられる can't be said to be ungrammatical, but it's uncommon/rarely used. Since 殴る is a godan verb, the most common causative passive form is 殴らされる.

Also, frequency can be influenced by many factors outside grammar including existence of other expression with similar (not necessarily the same) meaning and simpler form (動かす in this case).
However, expressions of "nearly 0 hit search result" are almost the same as "non-existence". As I wrote above, the transitive 飛ばせる sounds awkward to me, but the search results clearly show it's really used, so I have to accept its existence.

It was, but the 'is' part depends on the definition of causatives and the dialects in question.
凍らす/せる, 湿らす/せる, 驚かす/せる, 脱がす/せる,,, there are so many examples.

I believe the spontaneous verb 見える does not cover the usage of the potential verb 見られる and vice versa
見える can be potential (to express having the ability to see/recognize) when really seeing the object.
e.g.
(視力検査で)この輪のどこが欠けているか、見えますか。
眼鏡をかけたから、黒板の文字がよく見える。

Also, 見られる can be spontaneous for abstract objects, commonly occurred events or objetcts that are repeatedly seen.
e.g.
人口が減少する傾向が見られる。
防犯カメラが街角でよく見られるようになってきた。

Spontaneous is one of the functions of the potential form in many verbs. The existence of 見ゆ is the historical/etymological background I pointed out in my previous post.
