I just searched Yahoo and this was one of the first ones to come up. I check out some other forums, but this one is the best planned out and is very active.

Was looking for a Japanese forum and this one showed up. Happy I found it. Good people here.
The exact same thing here! I, too, was looking for a Japanese forum. Although I'm still figuring out how everything works here but hey, it looks good from the start!:D

Hey! Just curious how people got into this site, or why they became members... just a little warm up.. 😅
Actually, I'm returning to the JRef forums. I used to be a member in another lifetime (has got to be 10 to 12 years ago now). I *think* my old handle was 'smoke'.

Welcome back.

A search reveals you were most active in 2005, disappeared, stuck your head in the door a few times in 2008, disappeared again until a couple of posts in 2009, and then disappeared entirely. Trying to refresh my mind on who you are I scanned back through almost 200 of your old posts and was interested to note that apparently not a single one of them had the slightest thing whatsoever to do with Japan. You may imagine my surprise to learn you are going to make a visit!

a lot has changed since 2005 👍

I'm not sure how I originally found Jref since I have been using this site for ages. The forum I found with the help of the good old Google when I was looking for a Japan forum that would still be active. Happy to find one that's still active ^^

Nice to have you sign up to the forum, @Ketti !

No doubt, social media have funneled off some traffic, but - being non-commercial - we're here to stay. :)

All started with trying to download an anime, then I remembered an argument with my course mate correcting me that anime is not Asian cartoons but Japanese cartoons. So I decided to google it and it showed me that anime was actually Japanese cartoon. Out of curiosity, I further searched, 'so what is Chinese cartoon?' it brought out a funny contradictory analysis. To settle my confusion, I searched again, 'what are Asian cartoons called?' and at the top of my search results Was The JREF site. I clicked on it. Though I'm yet to get my answer, I got stuck here because it's interesting. . Hope to learn more

anime is just the word for "animation" (or cartoons) in Japanese. So it doesn't just mean Japanese or even Asian. But of course in Japan the default, with no other context, would be Japanese. But you'll see them qualify it to say "Disney anime" or "Korean anime" etc. I'm too lazy to check but In Japan I suspect they would simply use "anime" with qualifiers as in "Western anime," "Chinese anime," etc. So your question is more about what it means in the English-speaking world, as a genre. I would probably go check a fan magazine or DVD catalog to see how they categorize them.
Welcome to the site.
