I need some help with the recommendation form
I'm confused 
It says... "Give this form and one of the envelopes marked "confidential" addressed to yourself, to the person you have asked to recommend you."
So I asked the embassy and they said I can use any type of envelope... but what do they mean by "marked "confidential" addressed to yourself"...? >.<
Do I just write confidential and my name in the envelope? o.o?
Also, do you think it would be better if I ask my teacher if I can get the official school envelope to be used for the recommendation form?

The proctor said na if hindi ka nakatanggap ng e-mail before the interview date, it means that you failed the exam.. did you take the exam also?
Unluckily, I didn't make the cut Ms. Deziree. :'(
Moving forward, I guess my only option now is the Univ Rec...

Hello Distribu. Don't be disheartened. Everything happens for a reason. Also, IMO it would be much easier if you apply thru University Recommendation. Especially if you apply under Priority Programs. Kindly check my blog for further information re U.R.

Hi, I'm sorry if I am posting this here. Unfortunately no one visits the Graduate/Research Scholarship 2017 thread for updates. Though some information may also be relevant to undergraduate category.
(EMBASSY RECOMMENDATION TRACK)
I'm from the Philippines. I am applying for a Research Scholarship leading to PhD and I wanted to share with everyone my experience.
27 May - I submitted my application documents in person to the Japanese embassy in Manila. There were so many people submitting their applications. I am actually curious on the total number of applicants this year. I heard the annual application the embassy in Manila receives is about 500 on the average. >_< If someone could verify this information I'd really appreciate it.
10 June - Exactly two weeks from the date of submission, I received an e-mail from the embassy informing me that I made it to the cut and was invited to take the qualifying examination on the 20th of June, 9:00am onwards.
20 June 9:00am - I went to the embassy to take the English (and try the Nihongo) exam. The examiner reiterated that the Nihongo part does not affect our chances of qualifying for the interview. It will serve as reference only for the MEXT. I tried to count all the exam qualifiers and If I am not mistaken, we were about 112 that day. (I wish someone could verify this information as I only counted the number of rows and columns of tables and assumed they were all occupied when the exam started. I was seated in front so I couldn't glance at the back anymore.
The English exam is not really hard. You won't need more than 15 seconds for each question in Parts I, II, and III. Vocabulary words are those that you have probably learned in Grade 6 or freshman high school (Philippine setting).
In the section where you have to identify the grammatically incorrect phrase or word, DO NOT overthink. Some questions actually have simple errors, e.g., use of "the" and "a" or the use of adverbs.
In the hierarchy of exams with English component, SAT > LAE > UPCAT > Beda Law entrance test > MEXT English exam. But since MEXT is a zero sum game where you have to beat the rest, I think it's important to aim for a 100% score or not lower than 90% (which is not difficult to achieve at all).
20 June 4:05pm (5 hours after the exam) - I received an e-mail informing me that I passed the qualifying examination and was invited to sit down for a panel interview the following day. My interview schedule was early in the morning.
21 June - I went to the embassy. I checked with the security staff the number of interviewees for that day and he showed me the list with ONLY SIXTEEN names. >_< There's a second and final batch of interviews on 22nd June. If we assume that there's gonna be 16 people as well who were invited for the 2nd interview session, it's safe to assume that 32/98 passed the exam and made it to the interview stage.
The panel is composed of 5 members. My interview lasted for 15 minutes and these were the questions:
1. Tell us something about yourself (generic question).
2. Tell us something about your research proposal. Why is it relevant? How different is your research from this person's/institution's line of research? (expected question)
3. Tell us what you did during the times you were in Japan.
4. What are your plans after you earn your PhD in Japan? I told the panel I wanted to go back to my country and apply for a teaching position in my university.
5. Any plans of getting married soon? Nope, that's not a priority. It's the last on my list. Haha)
6. It took you seven years to finish your MA. What makes you think you'll finish your PhD in 3 years? ("I told them I needed to work that time. So I had to stop for 4 years and earn a living. I worked overseas for a couple of years before I finally decided to finish my MA degree." Although...technically, I only spent 4 years: 5 semesters of course work, 1 semester to prepare for the comprehensive examination, 2 semesters to finish writing my thesis).
And one panel said the interview session is over. I may leave the room. And so I left.
I was told the results will be released within a month, so there, I am officially in the waiting game for now. @-@
Last year, the number of research/graduate students who were granted MEXT scholarship was 22 (April departure) and 24 (September departure) per the press release of the embassy. Although I'm sure these numbers already include those who went to the university recommendation track. I wish someone could tell the number of successful applicants via embassy recommendation last year so we will have a rough idea on how many of the 32 interviewees will be happy a month from now.

African fellow! Hope my answer is not too late. It's pretty simple :
(1) Download the form
(2) open it in Microsoft word
(3) Fill it with your information. NB: don't change the format so you won't get some red warning messages
(4) Save and print.
If you can't do it this way, then:
(1) Download the form
(2) Print it
(3) Write your information with your hand to fill the form. What you'll write should be clearly readable else your application might be refused.

I passed the written examination and will have the interview next week!
Being a fresh high school graduate, I got my high school diploma this week and will hand it in as well when I go for the interview. The thing is, my diploma isn't in English nor Japanese and I got it translated to English and also got it notarized.
What I wanted to ask was, what should I bring with me? I mean, would this notarized and translated one + 2 photocopies of it would be enough? I don't need to bring my original non-English diploma, right?
Also, the diploma translation and its photocopies has a photocopy of the original diploma on the back page too. That would be necessary too, right?

Nah, you should be able to go to your school and ask them to make you an original copy~ basically they photocopy it and the principal stamps and signs it. Definitely don't give the actual original though.
The translations sound fine~
Maybe try checking your guidelines again cause they kinda differ from country to country sometimes..
But I think you only need the original copy of your diploma and I guess two copies of it since it'll be a tad different than the one attached to your translations.
As for the numbers, I can't really tell you..this year they told me not to number my papers, just to put them in the right order..

hello there, i applied for the MEXT undergrad this year and i passed the screening. i have exams on the 14th of july and i read through the thread that you guys have a line group. how may i join and what exactly do you guys do?
also, i'd like to know how similar is the EJU syllabus to the exams. currently, I'm struggling with the math (B) and i honestly do not know what to do.
i also would like to know, is it possible to change majors?

Hello,
I've completed the '13, '14, and '15 mext math b tests. Depending on what year you need, I may be able to help you. After doing a bunch of the tests, i'd have to say that the syllabus is extremely similiar to the tests.

i tried my luck with the 2007 test and i only got the first two right. skimming the rest of the years, i really couldn't relate much to the math I've taken (US high school system + SAT 1 & 2 math) also, the fact that calculator use isn't allowed isn't making me feel any better. i downloaded the EJU syllabus and i am aiming to study the topics individually but will that really do? I'm honestly feeling quite bummed, so id take any help you'd give.

Same thing here. Despite the syllabus in my country being mostly the same, on Maths B tests I screw up. The idea is that we put the emphasis on other parts of the maths (M1 maths which is the hardest) like analysis and algebra (linear and composition laws). I felt silly on '15 paper, we even haven't ever done the circle in highschool. But I'll study the basics before the test.
Also, is Maths B given on Natural Siences (physics, chemestry, engineering etc)? I feel confused.
