Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Undergraduate Scholarship 2017

Hello my friends. Who are Filipino Monbusho applicants here like me? Any updates? :) Who else here applied as well last May 27, 2016 for Research Student? Have you received any calls or emails? And how many days usually is the waiting time if in case accepted?

Hello Wool,

If you will be applying through University Recommendation, you email your prospect adviser/sensei at Japan first. Usually you would be able to find their email address online via University website.
Write a letter (via email) and make sure to highlight your achievements and credentials, such as degree sought, publications such as thesis, and reason why you'd like to work under your sensei's supervision. Wait for your sensei's reply. (This applies for all degree level: BS, MS, Ph.D)

For graduate course based on my experience (since undergraduate application has different process, ask +Collagen for this info):

There is an online application to which you'd upload scanned documents such as TOR, diploma, passport, recommendations. Wait for their assessment on your documents, for sometimes they would ask for more supporting docs.

*First screening would be done on the basis of these documents and the interview via Skype. If you passed on the first screening (meaning the University accepted you), the next screening would determine if they would consider to recommend you on scholarship such as mext.

*2nd screening (for you to be a MEXT candidate in particular): EMAIL-BASED exam-
3 professors from different fields would email you 3 questions each.
(A total of 9 questions). You might receive all their 1st questions at the same time. So you'd better use your time wisely. As soon as you email back your answer, then will you get the 2nd question. But bear in mind that for every question, you would only be given 24 hours to answer it. The faster you submit your answer the more credible you would be. Make your answer concise and comprehensible. Make it straightforward. They usually ask for answers within the range of 200-400 words.

After the 2nd screening. If blessed enough to pass again, then the University would email you an acceptance letter, that they would accept you as their student by October (insert year) and they selected you as final candidate for MEXT.

3rd step: Japanese government will dselect among the final candidates to whom they'd grant scholarships.

Hello Deziree, I would like to kindly ask if I can still ask my sensei for University recommendation at this point in time? I mean, I just lately discovered him via online search a few days after I submitted my application last May 27, 2017. And the person who received my application returned the email thread I attached to my application saying that they will ask for it if in case I got accepted from the initial screening?

Can I consider my other option to ask my sensei to help me vis University recommendation? Do I get I higher chance of getting the scholarship if I ask him to recommend me?

I'm still in a waiting game if I will receive a call or email if I passed the document screening. I am not sure if University recommendation will even help me to avoid this waiting game status. :(

Hello Distrib! There are 2 ways to apply for MEXT (1) embassy -May applicants (2) University recommendation- October. Since you've submitted your application this May 2016, then your way is thru embassy. Result of successful applicants thru embassy selection would be released by January. Unsuccessful applicants would be notified I guess by the month of August/September (embassy).

However, University Recommendation application starts from October to December. Meaning if embassy notified you around September that you're one of the unsuccessful applicants, then you can apply via Univ.Recom. Thru this selection, they notify unsuccessful applicants around February. And release list of successful applicants by the end of June.

I haven't tried via embassy. I only tried thru University Recommendation, so I really cannot objectively say which one is easier. But based on my experience, applying thru University Recommendation wasn't much of a hassle on my part, since all I have to do is submit my requirements online and via airmail, attend to the online/Skype interview, and answer email based exam. I don't need to go to Japanese embassy and such.

Also I applied in their 5-year program M.S. to Ph.D. not as research student. Ask your sensei about this. I'm now just waiting for the final result by the end of this month. What University are you planning to attend to?

Wow, thank you for this meaningful post. I really loved it. :)
Honestly, this is my first time to hear about Univ. Recom. because this info is not published in embassy of japan website?

Moreover, you mean to say they will still notify us even if I didn't pass the initial/document screening? Or they will just notify those who reached the interview phase? I badly want this scholarship... And I'm very stressed out on how long or how many days do I have to wait if in case I will be accepted (from the deadline May 27, 2016)

With regards to universities, I'm planning to take Tokyo, Osaka or Nagoya.

You know, my prospect advisor in Japan is very kind to me, he even make resolutions when he found out that my research topics is not under his scope, he even shared his articles to me. The conversation comprised of different discussions of our topics. Until it came to a point, that I told him in my last email that I'm very grateful to receive his emails and 'IF I WILL BE CHOSEN AS ONE OF THR SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS, I WOULD DEFINITELY CHOOSE HIM AS MY ADVISOR.'

Considering the fact that throughout our conversation in our emails, I have said this phrase 3 times, but still he talks and exchange information to me despite the fact that I'm not yet accepted from the Monbukagakusho 2017 scholarship. (That's why I perceived him as very kind to me)

But the catch is, when I added this phrase again the third time when I replied to our threads, I concluded that perhaps it sank to his mind that 'THIS GUY IS RIGHT, HE IS NOT YET ACCEPTED.' and for that reason, he hasn't replied to my last email. Does it mean that he will wait for my response if in case I pass my initial screening? (Considering that he always incorporate in his emails that 'Good luck to your application')

Is it appropriate for me to ask him if he can recommend me if in case I didn't make it to screening phase?

Message would only allow me limited # of letters lol. I've posted long message I guess and it was rejected by the system. Lol. You may want to visit my blog

Dhezcycoolet Angel's World: Study abroad (JAPAN) via University Recommendation with MEXT Scholarship

For your question, yes they would definitely email/notify you if you failed so as to give you a heads up/chance to apply thru different option (such as University Recommendation) or to find other scholarships.

I applied thru University Recommendation at Osaka University Graduate School of Engineering. My sensei there (Dr.Muranaka) is very accommodating. He also sent me some of his published works so I can align my research proposal under his lab.

I sincerely hope you'd get the scholarship thru embassy. So you wouldn't have to apply again :)
Should you need help, feel free to message me. I'm from UPLB.

Is it a wise option to do if I will ask my prospect advisor to help me for univ recom? If in case I'm not accepted via Embassy?if this will be the case, do I still have time to make it to October 2017 batch if I didn't make it via Embassy?

I will surely visit your blog. :)

Hey it's DeZiree! Hahaha not DeSiree. Anyway, of course you may ask for your sensei's help, but not until the start of University Recommendation application which starts from October to December.

Have a positive attitude. Asking for your sensei's help thru U.R. is wise but would give him an impression that you're not that confident. Claim it! Hope for the best and most importantly have patience (Patience is a virtue). I guess you have to wait (the "waiting game" as they've called it) till September at least. If you haven't received rejection email yet, then you stand a chance.

Thank you for correcting me as well my friend. :D
Honestly, the reason why I asked about the notification stuff because the consulate of Embassy told me that they wont even bother to inform us if we failed, only those who passed the document screening will be notified.

On the flip side, regarding your last post, do you mean that if in case I have not received any response til September 2016, that is the right time to ask my prospect prof to help me via univ recom?

One thing that bothers me the most is that, I am thinking if he even thought of helping me to go via Univ Recom considering the sharing of our articles via Email? It seems to me that he showed appreciation to my articles, he even told me that my topics were well written, it just so happened that it didn't fit his topics, that is why he shared a topic that both of us will meet halfway...

I visited your blog, it is really fresh and helpful. ;)

I wonder if the timings and the applcation procedures are the same with other univ like Keio, Tsukuba, etc..

By the way, congratulations to you univ recom.. God bless you always.

Based on the blogs I've read there are no grounds to limit you on applying thru U.R. even if you've already applied via embassy :)

that is why he shared a topic that both of us will meet halfway...-YOUR SENSEI (I guess) really wants to work with you if he had helped you up to that extent. I am saying this based on my experience, since my sensei also helped me in my field of study/proposal

I wonder if the timings and the application procedures are the same with other univ like Keio, Tsukuba, etc.. -Most Universities follow the same timeline and procedures (it's standardized if via University Recommendation, I guess). I'm speaking here based on the instructions/ timeline provided to our country only. Also, it depends on the program you're applying to, since some program tends to be more competitive than the other.

All I can say is both ways will make you play the "waiting game". But it is thru University Recommendation that you can build a personal relationship to your future sensei.

Does it mean that you're also in the waiting game like mine? Are you targeting this October 2016 or 2017 via Univ Recom? Or you've already processed yours last October 2015 and you're expected to depart this coming October 2016?

I've already processed my application thru U.R. last October 2015. Although Osaka U have already emailed me 2 congratulatory letter, I'd still have to wait by the end of June or mid July for the acceptance letter they would send to me by post (my address).

They already asked me to which airport I would depart here in the Philippines (NAIA), and to which airport I prefer to I arrive.

I'd be entering Osaka Uni as M.S. student this October 2016.

Wow, congratulations DeZiree! :) We're proud of you. ;)

Is it okay if I re-used my materials/documents used in my Monbukagakusho via Embassy for University Recommendation? :)

Have you processed your documents last September 2015 and submitted October 2015?

Application process via U.R. starts from October and ends by December 25 (you may want to check the website I've posted in my blog, since deadlines vary yearly).

Yes you may use again the documents you submitted such as TOR, proposal etc. Based on my experience I've completed all the requirements just before the deadline (yes I am a buzzer beater!).

But I suggest to complete all your documents as early as possible.

Honestly, I don't want to be negative on this part, but I want to be proactive at some point, if in case I am not considered for next screening. I am also bothered with the fact that my sensei has stopped replying to me because it sank to his mind that I haven't got yet the scholarship.

I'm afraid if I did not reply sooner to him (just for building rapport), my chances for getting the Univ Recom(if in case I am not accepted via Embassy) could fade away due to "long-time-no-see-or-no-hear" thing. On the flip side, can I ask him just to continue our last thread email, like, "Can I ask for the following requirements of your university for University Recommendation MEXT"? (Did I say it politely?)... Hmmm, I know it's pretty obvious that I was just asking him just to build rapport, because I know from the fact that I can search it by myself if I really want to enter their university. :) But, is it really helpful to ask him about these things instead of doing it by myself and asking personally their university's admissions?

I also understand your recommendation of waiting til September 2016, however, is it also advisable if I contact my prospect advisor in advance for a possibility of Univ Recom (if failed the Embassy), or for the requirements (at the very least)?

Anyhow, I also think that your recommendation of waiting til September 2016 is the best option I can do at this point...

Now I can feel you anxiety bro. Relax! There can be many reasons why your sensei isn't replying you by this time. Maybe he's busy with some academic related works. I guess they really have certain month of the year where in they entertain emails of aspiring International student. Japanese people knows when to prioritize things. So if you really want to email again your sensei you may want to say

"Dear Prof. _______,

MABUHAY!
I am writing to you again to express my sincere interest to study and work under your supervision. My application result through embassy is still unknown, but because I am determined to study in ______ University under your supervision, I would like to apply also via University Recommendation. I know that application through University Recommendation would start by October. Once again attached here is my updated curriculum vitae and TOR (Transcript of Records).

Thank you so much for your kind response. I am looking forward on being part of your laboratory/University as a MEXT recipient student.

Sincerely,

Oh my goodness. You're so kind to us (all of us, especially those from different countries)... :) I am very thankful to meet you here Ms. DeZiree and it's a pleasure to a very freindly, open-minded person like you, and considering you came from UP, it is really my pleasure. :)

Thank you very much for this bright suggestion and idea. Yes, you're right, I'm in an extreme anxiety due to this waiting game thing. But I feel relieved seeing your encouragements and motivations here in JREF.

If in case I got lucky and got accepted from this scholarship (whether it is via Embassy or U.R.), I will treat you personally in Japan, for a celebration as well. :D ;)

By the way, I am curious, are you in the office right now as well like me? He he

Hello, everyone! It's my first time writing here... Nice to meet you all! :D
I have some questions (more like, many questions xD) and was hoping I could get someone to help me >x<;;

1. How long should the answers to the questions in the application form and the reasons why we chose the field of study be? (If we type the application, there is no set length so... >.<)

2. What exactly do they mean by "What academic field would you like to study in Japan" In the application form? (I'm confused because they have a separate document for the field of study...?)

3. Do you think it's alright to write something kinda vague(?) in the question, "What kind of occupation/profession would you like to enter after studying in Japan"? (I still don't know what specific job I want yet so… T.T)

4. Do I need to include a normal recommendation letter along with the recommendation form, or do I just need the recommendation form?

5. Do any of you know if people with dual nationalities (not Japanese) have a lower chance to get the scholarship than a person who is 100% from the country they are applying from?

I know these are a lot of questions... but I really don't know what to do... and I don't know who else to ask ;A;

Thank you very much in advance ^^

Hiya ^^

1. As much as you can fit is the limit

2. You just write your majors again there..no one knows what the use of that question is though xD

3. Well, even if you don't know, I'd say try to be as little vague as you can be. They most likely want people who know what they want..

4. Nope, just the recommendation form.

5. I have no idea tbh, but I don't see why this should prevent them from taking you.
