Is ついで a type of grammar?

Hi Guys,
In a book I'm reading a Student called Non, has just ask the teacher? Are you a graduate of this school.
The teacher is playing the piano and does not seem to reply to the question.
The next line is
メロヂィのついでみたいにこぼれた先生ことばに,ノンが反応した。
what is th purpose of ついで?
The next line shes asks the teacher another question....
Teacher do you live around this area?

よろしくお願いします

「先生は晴小の卒業生なのよ」
メロディのついでみたいにこぼれた先生ことばに,ノンが反応した。
「先生、このへんに住んでいたんですか」
「そう、高校生のときに引越してしまったけれど」

This music room smell hasn't change...said the teacher and started to play the Piano with both hands.
is that the schools song.

Yes but I had to move when I was a high school student.

Actually, there is に there. みたい is just inserted between ついで and に.
ついで performs as a noun, so メロディーのついで has the same structure as 学校に行くついで or そこへ行ったついで in the dictionary. (You can think it as メロディーを弾くついで.)

Read carefully the line after 「先生は晴小の卒業生なのよ」, and notice the function of the sentence final particle よ. This is the teacher's words, not the narrator's question.

The line you mentioned as being the Teacher's not the Narrator's 「先生は晴小の卒業生なのよ」 ..who is this 先生? Is it teachers in General? the teavher her self?

Is the melody seeming to drown out the teachers words, while she is playing

You seem to misinterpret the meaning of こぼれた. Try again.
 
Be careful with auxiliary verbs.... there's no way you could read that as the teacher saying she "had to" move.

So are her words seeming to spill out like melodies as she is playing?

Yeah I probably should not jump to conclusions. I'm having enough dificulties trying to get to any conclusions Ha,Ha

Doesn't that mean.... it seems, while at the same time the teacher is playing a melody........

So are the teachers words 「先生は晴小の卒業生なのよ」 spilling out in time with the melody of the song or do they seem like the melody of the song?
 
You need to notice メロディーのついでみたいに and メロディーみたいに (= like melody) are completely different.
Her main purpose is playing piano, and her words are spilled out while she is doing it just like an addition.

Hi Toritoribesan,
I get the idea that she is saying something as she is playing the Piano and that the main pupose is playing th e piano. So its a bit like 話しながらピアノを引 く where the emphasis is playing the piano.
 
Basically, yes. It's more likely ピアノを弾きながら話した/呟いた, though.

As always thank you for your patience. Do you think that the teacher only said what she said because she was playing the school song? I mean was it triggered by the song that the words spilled out?
 
She would explain why she knew the school song (or, noticed the narrator's silent question and answered it).
