MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation

@sarut
The importance of English depends on different universities and professor too. But if your professor said he is fine with you, then your chance is good with his lab I believe. 😅

@Lawrence1 - Universities are responsible for ensuring at the time of your application that there is no way you will end up receiving multiple scholarships. When I processed applications, we would not consider an applicant who was applying to multiple universities because that person represented too much of a risk (and it wasn't worth our effort if there was a chance the person would back out, anyway).
@sarut - I agree with @miles5 - English test scores are not evaluated competitively, you just have to meet that professor's minimum requirement. Your English language test score does not appear anywhere in the recommendation documents that the university submits to MEXT.

Still no update from Kyoto University and from official MEXT. I start checking it almost everyday from now XD
Is there anyone who intent to apply at Kyoto University this years?

@TranSenz Actually, I saw many requirements also asked us to submit English test score(TOEFL, IELS ,TOEIC). Maybe there are some standard that they require.

@miles5 @TranSenz thank you for your reply, I feel better right now. I will keep myself busy to make time pass faster xD. soooooo anxious

@fin hope my English score pass the standard requirement.By the way.hope you will have good news from Kyoto University and from official MEXT. good luck

@fin - The universities do require you to submit scores. They are required to tell MEXT that you "have sufficient English language ability to complete your degree," so they need some form of proof if MEXT asks to see it. But what is "sufficient" is up to the professor's discretion. Maybe the professor has a minimum in mind, but MEXT does not have a specific requirement.
If you want a point of reference, you can look up the minimum score required for students applying as self-financed students - there is usually a published minimum in that case - and see if you meet that score or not.

It looks like Kyoto hasn't posted their MEXT scholarship application guidelines yet for this year (they're a little behind the ball), but the required documents and forms don't change much from year to year, so I'd recommend getting started on as much as possible now so that you can be ready to complete the last few forms and mail them as soon as the guidelines are available!

Hi All...
Can anybody tell me that, What will be the effect of copied research proposal on the application ? If your friend accepted in a university a year before you are applying and next you apply to another university with his research proposal what will its effect ? Kindly tell me
Don't consider it wrong its just a rough question.
Thanks in advance !

Hi Guys!

I'm new here. Looking for some information regarding the interview stage. I have an interview scheduled for next week with the Kyoto University and was wondering what kind of questions should I expect? Is it mostly based on my proposal or science knowledge or my background or what?

I am applying to do a doctoral course in the school of biostudies. The girl from the students affairs office was very helpful but she said she told me everything she was allowed to.

I have contacted my 'prospective' supervisor and he provisionally accepted me into the course and all he asked for is to prepare another proposal for the interview.

I am a bit nervous and not sure if I should prepare a short presentation about myself or my undergrad/MSc dissertations?

All the help would be greatly appreciated (and sorry for the long post)!

@czucherek May I ask who you're going to have interview with your supervisor or university staff.
So, You will know what is the objective of that interview. to apply an scholarship or to evaluate you capable.

From my own experience, My provision supervisor didn't let me introduce myself that I've prepared. But she start asking me about my passion,
Why I choose Kyoto, why I want to study this course in Kyoto university, what is my goal in the future. Then she asked about specific knowledge relate to my subject.
And at the end she asked me about my opinion in the problem of today Psychology and culture from my perception.

And if you don't start with being research student be assure him/her that the limited of language proficiency is not a problem.
Hope for the best!

@fin

Hi fin, thanks for replying. As far as I'm aware the interview would be with Professor Hideya Fukuzawa from the Applied Molecular Microbiology lab. The students affair officer said that there should be a committee interviewing me so there might be more people present that I am not aware of.

What do you mean by knowledge specific questions? Were you ask to answer something specific or just talk about what knowledge do you have (as in undergrad/masters studies)?

@czucherek Regrading to what you've said, this interview objective might be for officially accept you in his lab.
There are chance that he will ask about your MS thesis and your earlier project as well.

Well, at one point, she ask me how much I know about statistic for Psychology research, so I have to explain everything I know in general.
Most of all the question is about "do you know about.." "do you have an experience in.." "what is ... " "what do you think of...".

There are rarely of "how" question. Deep discuss will consume a lot of time and the time in interview is very limited compare to what they want to know.

Noted: However, she has already sent me an exam paper which asked me to describe in very specific topic before the interview day.

@fin, thanks again. The professor has already sent me a few questions that I have answered via e-mail so I don't really know what to expect.

Any ideas how many people usually apply for the uni. recommendation scholarship? I was told that there will be only 4 awardees max so it could be really hard to get it.

Hello! I am following this thread for a long time , I finally decided to post here :D
I was curious about the GRE (subject or otherwise) scores some universities demand. How important are they? I sort of read this entire thread, but nobody seems to have mentioned this. Any ideas?

Just notice that there are update for Uni recommend for this year now on MEXT website. Waiting for an announcement on University website.
2016年度大学推薦による国費外国人留学生(研究留学生及び学部留学生)の募集について(通知):文部科学省

@czucherek the quota is very few you can read in @TranSenz blog University MEXT Scholarships: Competition | TranSenz: Expat Living in Japan
He have nailed for the quota topic.
On your side, do you have any update for scholarship application yet?

@indojindesu I have read that GRE is somewhat important to the University that require it, but not so sure about that. Better if someone with experience can confirm.

Hi everyone,

I applied for MEXT through university recommendation, and I got the message from the university that I am shortlisted for the scholarship this week. So I guess I can say I passed the first phase. Does anyone know how big my chances are for actually getting the scholarship? Or am I still in a very competitive phase right now? Of course I am happy I got shortlisted, but I am still very worried.

Also, is there anyone else here who is in the same situation as I am? Or someone who passed/failed last year after being shortlisted? Maybe we can share our process with each other, that'd be nice.

I'm sorry Insh but can I ask you what university did you apply for?
Hi Ahmadreza, I applied for Hokkaido University. When looking at the posts from 2015 there were some people who didn't get into Hokkaido, even though they passed the first round like me. That's why I am extra worried. What about you?

Hey! :) congratulations on passing the first round! I think it might be better if you ask your professor about your situation! :) He/she probably knows better about it.

Also, i'm curious about the application period at Hokkaido university :) when did you apply? Because other universities are still accepting applications. (I haven't applied yet. Planning to apply next year! So i'm gathering information about various universities.)

Hi Indojindesu,

I don't have direct contact with my professor, but with someone else that functions as my contact person. But thanks for the advice!

I could apply until November 15th for starting in October 2016. If you go to the website of Hokkaido , you might still find some information about the procedures!

Hi, Lemylinh I'm Ahmadreza from Iran. I have also applied to GSIR, Ritsumeikan Uni as a research student. I've been through 3 rounds email-interviews with Mext scholarship committee. one of the members of the committee was my desired supervisor. anything else?

Thanks for your reply. Have you already finished your 3 interview rounds? They said that the 3 professors will contact me separately for the 2nd and 3rd round in the 1st email. However, at the moment, I have just received the 2nd and 3rd round questions from 1 professor and it seems that they will not send more questions anymore. I worry about the interview process.
In your case, how many emails have you received for your 3 interview rounds? When will you be informed the result?
Could I have your contact (like email address or facebook) to exchange more detailed information regarding the application procedure to Ritsumeikan.
P/S: I'm from Vietnam.

I have already finished my interviews. I have received 3 emails from my desired supervisor in the format of a committee comprises 3 professors including my desired supervisor and 2 of his colleagues. Like you only my supervisor sent the emails to me and only him asked interview's questions. it's worth mentioning that I have received the emails round by round!
I guess the results will be announced on Feb 5th. But don't worry I just like a gunny of stress!!!! actually I mean all of the candidates have stress.

I get the opportunity to have an interview for my PhD application with the faculty members to whom I am applying. They are in Utokyo. Apart from the questions taken from my research proposal/essay, what else must I expect? I know it may not have direct relevance with the title of this thread, but I think the way professors/lecturers ask the applicants during MEXT scholarship interview is not far different from they will do in my case.
