Why is it that sentences which are incomprehensible when I try to figure them out are completely obvious when I read the translations? :banghead:

The pitch accent also can be the key to distinguish confusing words.
大金 type0 (flat) /たいきん=/
代金 type1 (the accent is on the first syllable) /だ]いきん/

Oh, I hadn't noticed they have different pitch accents. Thanks.
Also, according to the pitch accent dictionary I used 大金 is always flat (0), but 代金 is described as "10", so both accented on the first mora(1) and flat(0) are possible, but "1" is more likely? 代金 国語辞書 - エキサイト 辞書
By the way, I never went out of my way to learn pitch accents, should I? Or do people usually pick up everything naturally - just by using/listening to the language?

People, especially young people tend to say words with flat intonation nowadays. I believe the type 1 is more common and traditional.

Yes that's exactly what it is. A test to see if you have the skills required for a specific job or company. Most companies in Japan have tests to measure basic skills.

就職試験/入社試験 usually includes paper or practical tests, such like common knowledge or essay examination. Job interview, i.e., 面接 is just one of them.

A rather strange sentence indeed, not to mention that "okusama" is used to refer to someone else's wife (the word for your own wife is "tsuma") and the question marker "ka" is missing at the end.
