MEXT Scholarship 2014

Last email from my professor

Hi, Rabie,

The postal mail did not come to Hirosaki Univ until now.
We have to wait it until next week.

Cheers

Let me guess.... no reply from the Profs even after 3 days?
Damn this is too irritating.
When will deliverance come?

A friend of mine said that in 2012 the result was announced on May 16th.
even if we ask the professors/office of international affair, the answer will be the same, "please be patient"

How much more patient should one be?
I will end up as a hospital patient. :P
Neways... we must persevere.

I have been selected on research assistantship in university of Patronas, malaysia, Kindly guide me should I select Japan if I get selected for MEXT or should I go for Malaysia. In Malaysia, they are only giving 1650 MR almost 500USD permonth.
In japan I applied in Hokkaido University.

Kindly guide me in this regard.

Hello Alisa,
First of all I have no idea of the rent in Malaysia so I cant say whether the scholarship is enough for living comfortably or not. Also I dont know how good Patronas univ is.
As far as I hear Hokkaido is one of the top univs in Japan. MEXT provides a hefty scholarship and also waivers tuition fees. With the MEXT scholarship money wont be a problem at all.
The only condition is that you will be required to learn Japanese in the 1st 6 months if you get the scholarship.
Now I have a soft spot for Japan and would suggest that you select Hokkaido. But in the big scheme of things I suggest that you study the ranking of your prospective universities and scope of job placements. Rankings and reviews are available on many forums. If you think that Hokkaido will benefit you in the long run then you should go for it else you go to Malaysia.

Regards.

Thank you so much Raj for your very informative reply.

Actually my professor approved me for supervision and he is asking to apply for admission. Admission Fee is USD 50. University of Patronas is below than Hokkaido in Ranking but I am not sure whether I will be selected or not as MEXT is not announcing the result.

I don't want to waste money and I also don't want to leave any opportunity.

That is why I am confused what should I do.

Do you know how much chances a candidate has if he is approved by University for MEXT?

Kind Regads,
My prof told me that once in a while mext does become late. This is probably cause of the elections that happened in japan around the end of 2013.
You have asked a tough question there. The chances depend on the university actually. Actually since Tokyo U is the highest ranked, all Todai recommended students will get the MEXT scholarship. The same goes for Kyoto Univ (Rank 2) I think. But after that every univ has a priority based recommendation. In other words, some universities give a ranking of students when recommending. Sometimes only a top few get the scholarship. This usually causes a problem when there are too many strong applicants. If you have been given 1st rank in the reco list then you will get it no matter what. I hope that helps.
My advice is that you accept the admission from Patronas (50 $ is not too expensive I hope) just to be safe. If you do get the MEXT scholarship then I guess the choice is obvious as you can naturally decline admission to Patronas by quoting "Personal Problems".
Regards.

Yes you are right I should apply for Patronas to save my seat.

I get some news the results will be get this Friday 16 May after my sensei contact university officers they told him that.

Oh, well. Really hoped that May 16 was true. :(

After some googling I came across Osaka Daigaku site and it says:

University Recommendation

Osaka University accepts some international students recommended by foreign universities under a student-exchange agreement between such universities or departments as well as from research institutes with which the university has exchange programs through joint research. The university recommends such candidates and the MEXT selection committee determines the recipients around June.

Guess, we have to wait till summer anyways.

hi, i have my results, i failed to get the scholarship but i hope i can get it next year, good luck to every one .....😭
