My name is Raj - India.
I applied for a Uni Reco MEXT at Kyoto U in January and after email interviews my Prof notified me that the University cleared my application.
The Univ would recommend me to the embassy and that the acceptance would be out by April end. He said that the embassy generally accepts all students that the Univ recommends.
As the end draws near i am getting more fearful when i see my inbox empty.
Does every university have a different notification date?
Anyone else here who has applied to Kyoto U?

So it seems Raj and teddycutie777 are in the "general" and will have results any day now.. so jealous! ovargasra and me have to wait until late June.. let's be (somehow..) patient!

I actually applied through the embassy first and one of the requirements in this process (which is also the first and major requirement for the university recommendation process [i think]) is to find a research adviser. So I found two professors and one of them was from the Tsukuba University. When the embassy didn't pass me, I asked both professors if they'll help me to still get the scholarship through university recommendation. Unfortunately the other one didn't want to, but luckily for me my prof from Tsukuba U still helped me get through all of this! So yey!!
You could use this webpage as a guide Contacting Professor | Dhresta's Corner and also its other pages in this blog are very useful!! This actually helped me get through the whole process. So just check it out!! Hope it helps!

He told me that he only has another 2 years before he retiring from Tsukuba university and will not be able to advise me on my research topic. However, i did request for recommendation from him, just hope that he can assist me in this.

I can't say it's tough in Tsukuba U particularly. But the most difficult part in the whole process in general would be finding a professor that will support you in your research and guide you through the application. Once you get a professor, everything will be smooth sailing since he'll be the one to get you through this all.
You could still get other professors from other universities if no one will support you in Tsukuba. Is the course you want in Tsukuba U?

Yea, i did sent emails to other universities professors, currently still waiting replies from them. Hopefully, will get one to advise me at least. *Pray*.

When you say result, meaning your result in the embassy screening? Of course. The embassy process is quite different from the university recommendation process. Once the embassy passes you in their screenings (like exams, interview, whatever they do) you will have to get a Letter of Acceptance from the University/Professor, but you could ask the embassy about that part. So yeah, it's important to update your professor.

I mean the result for my degree. How long do you get to know your result through university recommendation? Sorry if i asked too much. ^^
How do you find which professor research field relevant to your research topic because from what i have seen right now, most of them are different in term of their main goal. Can you shed light on this?

When you say result of degree... your course/field of study? Have you graduated already?
As for the professors, you'll just have to look at their profiles and see if that professor and your research field coincide with each other. Sorry if I'm not able to answer your question fully. Maybe others could pitch in their experiences?

I applied to Kyoto U for the scholarship and am awaiting for the results.
I am a Master Student (Computer Engineering) at IIT Bombay, India. My field is NLP (Language, Linguistics and Translation).
This all started 1 year ago when my current guide allowed me to go to Kyoto U for an internship.
My guide in Kyoto U gave me some work on a related topic and he seemed to like the amount of effort I put in. (Although the results were nothing flashy.... IMO they were rather average). He offered to take me up as a PhD student.
6 months ago, this guide and I met in a conference and asked me if I was still interested in pursuing a PHD and told me to apply for university recommendation through Kyoto U.
I had to first send all relevant documents. 4 main points I will clarify.
1. A strong recommendation letter from your current guide to the president of Kyoto University is needed. So impress your current guide. I had 4 international publications already so that part was quite easy for me.
2. Your grades (GPA/CPI) should be good. In Japan then have a GPA out of 3.0. Anything above 2.5 is ok. In my current university we have a CPI system out of 10.0 and I have a 9.3 so that converts to 2.79 approx. There again I was safe.
3. An expected graduation certificate. This one is tricky. If you have not graduated from your current college but will be soon (in 4 months or so) you need to get a certificate which clearly mentions that you are expected to graduate by a certain date (1-2 months before you start at the Japan University). This will be a certificate (provisional) in the form of a letter from the head of the department certifying that you will indeed graduate by a specified date. If you have already graduated then you need your graduation certificate.
4. A good research plan. You will be given a page in which you are to give your research plan. Write in as much detail as possible. I initially wrote only 5-6 points but my prof told me to expand this and I made this till 20 points.
Once the documents were received they go through an initial screening at the department level. After that come email based (or skype might also be possible) interviews. In mu case the panel consisted of my Kyoto U guide, 1 other Prof from the same lab and 1 Prof from another department. These go on till they are satisfied and then they recommend you to the university via a recommendation letter from the main Prof. Note that this means that there are 2 recommendation letters you need before you are recommended to MEXT.
The university has to now screen you and in my case there were 30 applications and 8 were to be selected. I made that cut. The research plan, grades and the recommendation letters really matter here.
My Prof then said that I had to wait upto april end to get the final notification from MEXT. In case of Kyoto U, all students recommended by university get the MEXT scholarship. This I am guessing is due to the the ranking of Kyoto U.
And now, here I am.... waiting for the final result.

Hey there~! There are a lot of scholarship that the Japanese government offers, so I suggest that you try to read and also search first in the internet since there's a lot of information lying around out there. The website of the Japanese embassy in your country might also have some information regarding your questions. You could start from there and then think about what you want to do/scholarship that you want to take.
