MEXT Scholarship 2012

hello people, just a quick off-topic: how do you solve 2007 undergraduate Math B 1. 5) ?
since from the equation we get that D=-48, then I suppose something should be done with (2a-b)(2b-a), or not? please help

Hi, i think you are in a very wrong place to ask this question. This is a postgraduate applicant thread, more importantly people here are in a more advanced stage of getting selected (infact everything is done other than the final WORD). i would suggest you to look for a more suitable thread to post your question.

yeah, I know that this is wrong place for my question, but it's the most visited and I want the answer fast, so I just thought that someone mind be kind enough and help me with this exercise. btw, this thread is not only for postgraduate. anyway, sorry if i troubled you

even though its not specified for postgraduate only, it has become a postgraduate thread by default, as almost all the posters here are postgraduate applicant:)

no way you troubled me and wish you good luck with your application

Hi guys,

Still no final word from the embassy (MEXT) but I received a package from one of the university I received an LOA from.
They want me to fill out some forms and basically apply for dorms etc.

Deadline says Feb 28, but with no final word from MEXT how do I go about this. Also, wouldn't I have to make initial payments to secure dorm etc ?

How does it work, in terms of payments to secure dorms before traveling to Japan ?

Hi, would you mind to say which university sent you the package?? and what exactly are in the package??

Did they ask anything about securing your place in dorm through payment?? If not, why even you bother of that. I mean why you don just fill up the form and meet the deadline if money issue is not related.

@ SereneGem, I and my other friends from India also received mails with forms to apply for dorms from our respective univs. And we have already applied for it. you will be required to pay the initial payment when you reach Japan. Its just a usual process which the university does to help new international students. My prof said that we received this mail as they have given us a OK. According to him, we will get the final OK in due course, its now up to us to accept or decline the offer. So fill the form as required and send it atleast a week before the deadline. so that if something needs to be changed they can contact you. In our case we even did not required to sign it, as our profs had to do it on our behalf. :)

thanks guys. I'll do just that.

I know the wait till final word is really frustrating, but we have waited for this long so its only a matter of time now.
Im extremely worried about when we will get that final confirmation and hope its in Feb and not March cause I'd have to give sufficient notice to resign from job etc.

Another quick question for persons who received more than one LOA. Have you received more than one uni package ?

SereneGem, I don't know what you mean by uni package, but all I have from Todai (they sent it on september) is original LoA and applications in case I refuse going there. That's all. Oh, and TUFS sent me only original of LoA (they sent it on august). But as I wrote before, embassy asked me to choose only one university, so I rejected TUFS... I don't know why, but my school has not sent any application for dorms yet. Is someone likely to go to Graduate School of Human Studies, Todai? As far as I understood, School of Engineering, Todai has already sent applications for international students and researchers. But I haven't heard from my school since 17th January...

But my professor assured me, that I don't have to worry about accommodation and International department would take care of it... So I can not move unless I get final confirmation of MEXT... BTW as I also wrote before, embassy assured me final results would be announced till 9th February. Today is 7th. So I am counting every minute >< Wish you all good luck!

I haven't got any package from Todai (Hongo campus) too, aside from the LoA. When I asked about forms/application for dorms, the graduate school's international advising office told me that they will take care of application for accommodation and language classes. They assured me that they confirmed my acceptance and they will inform me about accommodation and other matters when they get final confirmation.

I do hope that we get the final notification of placement and approval by 9th February. Good luck to all of us! :-)

Oh, it's such a relief to hear that! I thought I am the only one who didn't receive any application for dorms ^^ Well, all we can do is to focus on smth else and wait ^^ Fingers crossed!

Well, Bota take me in your boat. And don worry, not all applicants from the engineering department of todai got the package for dorms, because then somehow they missed me :) which i don think would happen.

Thank you kouun9! Wish you guys good luck! Well my school asked me to wait more for accommodation information, so now I am worried about this ^^ Although, I need only bed and shower, so I really don't care much about accommodation...

Congratulations Bota and neuro11! Wow, your part of the world is fast! :) Both of you are in the Hongo campus right? I'm in Komaba. They haven't updated me with dorm applications but I sent them a form for the school ID picture. :DD

Hic. Can i help me ???

Sorry for off-topic, but I have 2 quick questions, guys:

1. I am not gonna get 予備教育 (preparatory course of japanese I guess) and it was decided not by me (no idea who decided that professor, school or MEXT), is that good or bad??? I ve got 2 kyuu 3 years ago (that time there were only 4 levels) and well I guess I have upper-intermediate level of japanese... Some guys say preparatory course is just a waste of time, some guys say preparatory course helps to prepare for masters entrance exam... So I am confused >< What do you, guys, think about it?

2. Can I use my Iphone 4 (unlocked and purchased here in my country) in Japan? I heard Docomo started to sell sim card numbers. Is it true and is monthly payment expensive?

Thank you on advance,

hi bota, regarding your 1st question, isn't entrance exam totally different from language course. I mean in the school of engineering studnets need to appear in of the 3 courses : Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry. and the exam is totally in english (if you don prefer appearing in Japanese). SO wondering why language preparatory course would be helpful exams based on totally different topic.

sorry cant help with your second question

neuro11, I have no idea what kind of exams I am gonna take for masters. But as our fields are totally different, maybe Human Studies includes japanese language exam... My research is related to literature and culture :P

Bota, I have a similar situation with you. I'm in the Komaba campus, in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. What's your graduate school? I also have 2 kyuu from 2 years ago and I am going straight to research. Makes me nervous because I have less time to prepare for the Master's exam. It will be in Japanese. How long are you granted research? I'm granted 6 months ONLY.

Mitch2526, I am going to Graduate school of human studies and sociology, Hongo campus I guess. They gave me LoA for 6 months too. But they explained me that I can extend research term up to 2 years. You should confirm cos I think every school of Todai has the same policy. If I wanna extend I just need to re-register there. I was not against preparatory course and I am wondering why this happened. For example a girl from my country, who also got the scholarship, is going to have this course and she is upset cos she has N1. She thinks it's a waste of time... She is going to Keio dai. Maybe it depends on the policy of every university? Well anyway, that means we have to study more  in order to get in masters... 頑張るしかない ^^
^^

so far i know every student is enrolled in 6 months research program initially and can extend further but also need to consider that they must enter into Masters program/Doctoral within 2 Years for April entry and within 1 year and 6 months time for October entry of a particular year. This is the rule what i knew.
Now, Mitch2526 i wonder why you just said that you have less time for Masters exam. as you are going in April you definitely can not sit for entrance exam held in April. So either way all people enrolled in April must sit for their entrance exam in October regardless of who is doing language course and who is not. Please correct me if i am wrong there.

Neuro11, you are right. But the last point i think it is not "must". I mean we are not obliged to take masters entrance after 6 months. But mostly students take it, in order to try, to practice.

I really was confused and was going to ask you about this. I thought you can only sit for entrance exam once and pack your bag if you fail that. SO you say one can sit multiple times for the exam . Are you sure? because i looked for but did not find any help regarding this. There was some information regarding this in the info letter attached with my LOA. will have a look into that again.
