Shameless Singapore TV company MediaCorp rushes in to make money out of Japan quake
In the wake of the massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan yesterday (Mar11), MediaCorp's Vice President for Marketing Communications sent out this mailer for advertisers to book their advertisement slots, now that all eyes would be on their disaster coverage.
Here's what the mailer reads:
"Be a Part of Channel NewsAsia's Breaking News Coverage on the Japan Tsunami
"Channel NewsAsia: Massive Tsunami Hits Japan after Massive Quake
"A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake shook Japan in the early afternoon today, unleashing a powerful tsunami that wrecked(sic) havoc along the streets of coastal towns.
"Book your spots in the Weekday Evening News Bundle as the channel brings viewers comprehensive coverage reports on the disaster with extended versions of news bulletins tonight.
"Call our sales representatives now!"
STOMPer whatdemocracy, who contributed the story, wrote:
"While people are suffering from the disaster, our very own Channel News Asia rushes to cash in."
Another STOMPer RidiculousMedia also levelled criticism at MediaCorp:
"This is really stupid.
"MediaCorp wants to make money when this is happening?
"If they were to make a program and ask for donations it would still be ok. But this is profit for MediaCorp itself.
"In the email it was not stated that they want to donate any amount. What now? No TV license, so they earn money this way?
Other Singaporeans also reacted with shock at the brazen call for advertising dollars:
Cherring wrote:
"Oh my GOD MediaCorp, how despicable can they really get. Not even a tinge of solemnness AT ALL.
"Got me wondering whether they did the same during previous natural disasters as well."
Julian wrote:
"I doubt that people watching coverage of the Japan tsunami would be remotely interested in whatever product you are plugging at the time as well."
Missyeley wrote:
"Simply put: REJOICE! MAJOR EARTHQUAKE HITS JAPAN, BEST TIME TO PUT YOUR AD SLOTS HERE AND NOW!

Unbelievable, isn't it? Indeed is a 'money-minded' country. The country is in the world's top 10 financial centers. To us, the country has been known as 'Kiasu & Kiasi' country which means 'afraid to lose & afraid to die' if translated directly from Hokkien (Chinese dialect) to English language. So, it's not surprising to us.....

You can blame the TV company in question if you want, but please don't generalize as if all the people in Singapore is like that.
:auch:
I have a great friend in Singapore, who is most caring and generous in many ways.
On the next day of the quake, she called me from Singapore to see if I'm OK and she also called many her friends in Japan. Her concern and kindness are genuine.
I'm very much offended by your spiteful comments.

To Undrentide,
Sorry to make you feel offended. And 'no blaming' in these case. Just a form of ironic humour. Be cool. Don't take it too seriously. The fact that it's only the local or mainland people in both of these countries knew and understood the culture of the long stories behind the history. Moreover, it's been like a joke in these two countries. I got more friends than you from there and we always humorously bombarded each other in friendly conversations. You're lucky to have one great friend from there. If you truly understand the culture, you will know what I mean. So, take it easy... and of course, good friends always care for each other. Cheers to your friend....

I should not take it seriously? Now you must be joking.
It's a very bad timing and bad taste to make a joke here and now, if you think for a minute what it is about in the first place.

Woa...... I think that will be enough for this issue because it's pointless to continue. And it's not about bad taste or bad timing of something that I've mentioned. Like I said, it's between the two countries culture jokes. And it's definitely nothing about your respected country. You must have misunderstood. Everyone in the world is mourning about the catastrophe, not only the people in your respected country. So, take it easy.... My deepest apology. Thank you.

What the hell? This is kinda wretched of them, isn't it? Reprehensible.
