Hi,

1. エイミーと山下さん一家はほかの留学生や家族、そして先生と別 れて、車でそば屋に行った。

From this I get:

エイミーと山下さん一家は = Amy and the Yamashita family

ほかの留学生や家族 = the other visiting students and (their host) families

そして先生と別れて、車でそば屋に行った = then parted from the teacher(s) and went by car to a noodle restaurant.

What I don't understand is how ほかの留学生や家族 joins with the rest of the sentence. Is there a missing particle or linking word or something?

2. A textbook comprehension exercise asks:

エイミーと山下さん一家は何でそば屋に行きましか。

What is the grammar of 行きましか? Is it possibly a typo?

3. In a textbook I've come across その一 and その二 apparently used to mean "part 1" and "part 2" respectively, but I can't seem to find this meaning listed in the dictionary, and the usual interpretation of その meaning "that" doesn't seem to make much sense. Is it a different word, or just used in a special way?

4. お父さん、私が日本食を食べられるかどうか心配してい たのを覚えていますか。

I translate this as: "Father, do you remember how I was / you were worrying whether I would be able to eat Japanese food?"

But who was doing the worrying? The speaker or her father?

5. A girl is writing a letter to her parents, and has just been asking herself what other interesting things have happened that she can tell them about. Then she writes:

ああ、そうそう、お母さんは買い物が大好きだから日本 の買い物について書きましょう。

My translation: "Oh, mother, since you're very fond of shopping, let me write about shopping in Japan."

However, I don't quite understand the nuance of そうそう. How would you translate it here?

1)
ほかの留学生や家族、そして先生 are all the objects of 別れる. そして is used to list the nouns, and not to connect the clauses, here.

2)
Right. It's obviously a typo of 行きましか.

3)
4 全体をいくつかに分けた中の、ある部分をさす。「―一、―二」

4)
The both interpretations are possible. It's impossible to say which is correct just from this single sentence.

5)
[感]

1 忘れていたことをふと思い出したときに用いる語。「―、君に言うことがあった」

「そうそう」の検索結果 - Yahoo!辞書

"Oh, yeah" might be suitable in this context.

Well, this has added to the confusion I had in 家まではまだ数駅ある. I thought the only possible interpretation was "do you remember how you were worrying whether I would be able to eat Japanese food?"

It's obvious between the speaker and her father who the one worrying about it was, so the example sentence is quite natural in the context. One of the ways to avoid the ambiguity is, for instance, 私が日本食を食べられるかどうか心配してくれていたのを覚えていますか for the case of her father is the subject.
