Hiya,

I understand this is something to do with written compositions, having students write about their part-time jobs for example, having class discussions and giving out homework, but I don't understand how the linking words join everything together or what the overall purpose of the sentence is. Could anyone enlighten me?

I guess this sentence is related to
in your earlier post.

And I wonder if it is

it (= more effectiveness with making students practice first) is the same about composition

if the teacher make (students) write about the part-time jobs

first let the class discuss about it, then

give it (=composition) to them as homework.

Yes, it directly follows it.

Yes, sorry, that was my typo.

I am a little confused about で here. Can I interpret it as a sort of topic marker, meaning "as far as compositions and suchlike are concerned..."?
So, 出す is an imperative here? (The text is addressed to the teacher.)

Gramatically, this で is the -te form of the copula だ.

No. As undrentide-san wrote, something like (出す)方が効果があがる/方がいい is omitted at the sentence end.

I hope I've realised where the problem lies. I was previously assuming that 作文も同様 meant "compositions and similar things", and trying to make で attach to that. Now I'm thinking it should be split as:

作文も = (for) compositions too,
同様で = it is the same

This is more or less what @undrentide wrote, but I didn't match it correctly to the words of the sentence.

Have I got this roughly correct now?

No. As undrentide-san wrote, something like (出す)方が効果があがる/方がいい is omitted at the sentence end.
So, without the previous sentence to provide these missing words, this sentence does not grammatically sustain itself?

You've got it right.
If literally translated, it would be something like
composition is also (in) the same (situation).

No, not really.
If one reads this without any context,
one would feel it is not stating the main point and would think "... and what?"
e.g.
なにがいいたいんだろう?would be a typical reaction. ;-)

No, not really.
Thanks undrentide. I think this partly explains why I originally did not understand the purpose of the sentence. Of course, I did not realise I needed to assume those omitted words!
