MEXT Scholarship through University Recommendation

Pacific:
I don't think it matters whether you're pursuing a Master's or PhD program, they want you to create a research plan and outline as part of your application (well at least that's what I get from the United States form). Usually Master's program does have some sort of limitations on how far your research can go outside of your advisor's field of interest, but remember that Japan might do things differently. I've noticed that some of the professors that I'm considering as potential advisors have had students whose Master's thesis and PhD dissertation really didn't have anything in common with the advisor's main research goals--they just seemed to be in the same general academic field. Do you have a professor you have in mind that you would like to work with? Look at their school/department website and see what his/her students are doing their research on.

I used this one as an example: (you have to delete the spaces)
http: //larsmartinson.com/ research-proposal/

He was an art student that received the MEXT scholarship so it might not work for you as well, but it was a good guideline for me and I'm a science person. Also if you're doing a Master's program you might want to make your timeline in monthly/semester increments and then use yearly increments in the PhD program, cause really the PhD is mostly just pure research (well at least that's what I think it is).

Thanks for the good link. I really appreciated seeing an example of a research proposal with the detail that's expected. He really had a good way of breaking it down.

I'm looking to pursue a Master's of Engineering, and one of the challenges I'm finding with writing my proposal is trying to be specific enough. It's hard to know exactly what topic would be good to research within a certain field, without having already done a significant amount of work already. But I guess the more you can do now, the better your chances are later...

I have narrowed down a potential supervisor (or research group at least). Any thoughts on whether it would be a good idea to send them off an email about their research? Any suggestions on what to say in a letter like that?

Thanks for the posts!

you're applying through university right? which one?
because this is interesting, usually only embassy recommendations looking for research plan in their application form, and of course applications for reasearch students or PhD students, both, embassy or uni recommendation...so i'm curious because it's for masters program through uni...

I'm looking to apply to the University of Tokyo, Department of Civil Engineering. They are requesting a research outline on the application form. But like I said, I'm finding it pretty challenging to be very specific at this stage, especially for a master's program, with only two years to complete your project. I'm finding it especially challenging for civil engineering, because, often with theses, there is a significant amount of lab work, or field work, or data collection.

Hey guys,

This is my first post. I have also applied to MEXT through university recommendation and was told the result will not be released until end of July.

yoroshiku!

hello,
Japanese universities follow different pattern for GPA. If your university do not give GPA but grades then you can use the following formula for calculating your GPA by grades (A,B,C..)

Grade Points Judgment GPツ(Grade Pointツ)
A 80ツ〜100 Pass 4.0
B 65ツ〜79 3.0
C 50ツ〜64 2.0
D 35ツ〜49 Nom-pass 0
F Below 34
Drop 0

The calculation formula shall be as follows:

GPAツ?? 4.0ツ×Aツ+3.0ツ×Bツ+2.0ツ×C/D
A: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "A"
B: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "B"
C: The number of credits earned for courses assessed as "C"
D: Total possible credits for courses officially taken, INCLUDING those for courses assessed as non-pass..

I got this from one of the Japanese universities and this is general the system followed by most of the universities , I hope this will help , PM me if u need more help

Ganbatte!!

according to japanese calculation formula for GPA my score is 94%.

How much can my GPA help me gain Monbukagakusho scholarships for undergraduate student?

Interview was required but no examination in my case. Supporting documents are similar to the embassy application.

Dear Akira, Thank you very much for your kind reply and help. However I have some more problems. Can you please help me regarding these questions?

1. A professor of a Japanese University has kindly agreed to recommend me for the MEXT scholarship through University Recommendation. He has told me that he would try the scholarship for me through his university. In this case who will prepare the research proposal - me or my Professor?

2. How is the interview taken in case of the scholarship through University Recommendation - over telephone/ internet/ anything else?

3. What kind of question is asked in the interview? Please tell me in details.

4. The interview is in English. However, is Japanese Language proficiency is examined? Is any Japanese word is asked?

5. Is it possible to apply for the MEXT scholarship through more than 1 university? i.e. can I apply for this scholarship through 2 or more different universities in the same time?

6. Is any official agreement is required between the respective Japanese university and my university for this scholarship?

1. It depends. If your professor is kind enough (in other words, he wants you the most), he will write on your behalf.

2. Mine was through internet (email), I heard some people were through video cam or telephone.

3. He asked about my past experience in my final year project. Why this sample, how to conduct my experiment, the problems I was encountered during my experiment and how did I overcome it.

4. Yes, in English. No, I don't think they will examine our Japanese Proficiency but it is always good that to prove you are fluent in Japanese.

5. I am not very sure about it, I also wish to know it if anyone can answer it.

6. No, I don't think so.

I answered based on my experience, it could be different from others. However, I wasn't successfully grab my scholarship. I think it's better for you to seek for successful candidates' help too.

It actually depends on what the university requires you to do. Or what their admission procedure is.

I was recommended to MEXT (and got it yahooo!!) without any examination or interview. The documents I submitted were used to assess my qualifications.

So I suggest you read or inquire about the procedures of your target university.
