Everyone thank you for having me in the wonderful forum. I just arrived in Japan 23rd of April I'm an US air force member presently at Yokota AB an ill be living in Fussa for 2 years im single without kids and im seeking to explore the culture and travel. My home town is Detroit ,Michigan please give some advice to a worthy new gajin to the land of the rising sun .

Well now, he said an experience you'll remember forever, it's not all great!

As nice gaijin pointed out, I didn't say it was a "great experience", but it'll be an experience you'll remember forever. Just check some of the other posts by former military members who spent time in Japan like Flash Jeff, Uncle Frank among others who some are also still living there. It'll be an experience, that is, if you get your butt off base often enough to experience the real Japan and learn a little about the language and culture. I've known far too many people on base who hardly ever left the base except in a group on a sightseeing tour and left Japan claiming they had lived there when they experienced nothing of Japan. I hope you will not be one of those. Enjoy the free trip there while you can and take it all in - the good and the not-so-good.

One word of advice: Try and stay as far away from base bars and hostesses as much as possible as they are a magnet and money pit for the newbie serviceman in Japan. Trust me, been there done that. The hostesses will have you thinking that they are madly in love with you when all they want is the cash in your pocket and they'll have you believing it!

Learn a little of the language by taking the basic Japanese courses offered on base and then visit places that base personel normally do not visit. Then you will experience Japan. If at all possible, try living off base and sharing an apartment with another serviceman. It'll be well worth it if you want to experience Japan.

Enjoy it while you can if that is your desire!
