I know the exchange rate is always changing but does anyone know a good equation to use when trying to find the exchange rate from yen to the US dollar?

The current one. Google "dollar to yen" or check a currency site.
When I'm actually buying stuff in Japan, I just think of it as 100 yen to the dollar. That way is easy to calculate, and I'm always overvaluing the currency I'm holding (As long as I purchased the yen for more than 100 yen to the dollar). It doesn't make a huge difference in what I spend, but its ease is the biggest plus.

That sounds pretty good because your actually spending less and esentially saving money!

It's good for tons of currencies, and you can even select the date you want. Good for businessmen or if you want to figure your taxes precisely instead of using the annual average exchange rate.

Well I was actually wanting a quick equation I could type in my calculator when im walking around shopping. I have a handy currency exchange widget on my Mac but that wont help me in Japan.

I basically use Nice Gaijin's method, figuring 100 yen is about $1.00. Right now, the rate is 114 yen per dollar. If I see something that's 2,000 yen, I figure it's about $17.20 to $20.00. No need for a calculator.

Can't get handier than a very general 100 yen to the dollar.
Cost you see: 10,000 yen
Equation: divide by 100
Result: general approximation of US$100
You do realize that the exchange rate changes by the hour, don't you?

Yes of course but usually exchange rates do not change substantially in an hour and i just wanted to figure out a way to get a quick idea of how much im spending. I think the way everyone saying is a pretty good method!

I find this easy.
A Yen is a penny, but adjust a little
220,000 Yen is roughly 2,200 dollars (two zeros lost)
32,100 Yen is roughly 321 dollars (two zeros lost)

Same I do. Much easier that way. will be less too, so you can be pleasantly surprised.
