Tattoos and Piercings... Your personal experiences?

I always wanted a tatoo and still have a desire to get one. I like celtic patterns especially. I would place it where it could be covered up by clothes. I do like massages though and since I am going to splitting my time between the USA and Japan it could be a potential problem. My Japanese spa brochure says that you must inform them if you have a tatoo and they have the right to terminate your appointment.

I think with getting a tatoo though, you have to chose wisely what you ink on your body. My brother in his wild days got a a playboy bunny on his shoulder in hot pink because he thought it was "cool". Well, needless to say he hates it now and regrets that he got that particular tatoo. He has others that he loves, but that darn bunny just annoys him now! It really is hideous.

Does anyone have experiences getting tatoo in Japan ? It would not be bad to get actual information.

I had some work done on my arm in Tokyo (Koenji actually). Very professional and skilled artist, though it was a little pricey. There was a Canadian or US guy working there who did piercings but other than that the rest were Japanese artists. They have a great studio there actually, I'd go again.

Tattoos and Onsen?

I've heard from some American and Japanese people that you can get rejected from a lot of onsen if you have a tattoo of any kind. So, if you have a tattoo on your arm for instance, would you be able to cover it with an armband or something? Also, are there onsen where people with non-yakuza style tattoos can still enter?

I'm afraid these people are mistaken. What I think these people must be referring to is the sign that sits outside some onsen giving the no tattoo rule. It's just a sign. I've been in public baths with people with all kinds of tattoos. I've seen the sign many times and it seems to me to be referring more to a type of undesirable person than a tattoo owner.

Well I've no tattoos, but i like them, actually my brother is a tattoo artist and once a year he goes to New York to work on Studio Enigma. By the way, i love the Yakuza style tattoo, the dragons, the tigers, the sakuras >_<
Anyway, yesterday i just read about people (who have tattoos) can't enter in public baths in japan, or something like this...

No tattoos for me. I have a belly piercing though. It's so common here in the US. Any Japanese get them?

The navel is rarely exposed here (to safeguard against lightning, undoubtedly), so it's hard to tell how many bellybutton piercings there are. I'm sure the number is small.

My brothers wife has a tatoo on her back - above the rim on low cut jeans. When my japanese mother in law saw it she was chocked. My wife had to quickly think up a lie to calm her down. She said that it was not a real one - merely one from a stcker which would fade away soon.

I think the older generation in japan think that only prostitutes and yakuza women wear tatoo.

I find that small hidden tatoos and piercings can be quite sexy. I respect that some people like to have facial piercings, but frankly mostly I find them revulting. I keep saying to myself "don't look at it", because I fear that the unfortunate youngster in front of me will see how discusted I am. Maybe I am just an old fart, buy hey - you will all grow older!

Personally, I would newer like to have a tatoo. When I was young and wild I coloured my blend hair black. I am so happy that my hair is again its natural colour. Man - I looked ugly. Back then I thought that I would remain a rebel all my life. I simply could not imagine how much I would gradually change. Most young people obviously think Tatoos and pircings are cool. However, when they become parents and grandparents they will not find them so cool. I am sure that lazer and plastic surgents will have plenty of jobs in the decades to come when people decide to remove their tatoos and scars from various pircings.

I do not regret that I was wild and rebelled when I was young - on the contrary I think that it was great. But I am so happy that do not have "AC/DC" on one arm and "Born to be wild" on the other. One of my best friends have such tatoos, he is really sorry now.
