The latest controversy followed a video Trump posted on his Truth Social platform last Saturday. The apparently AI-generated clip included a brief sequence showing Trump dressed like the title character from the anime and manga series Naruto, making a hand sign associated with the franchise. Fans reacted angrily online, arguing that the imagery had been used without permission. It was not the first time Japanese pop culture had appeared in political content linked to the White House. Over recent months, online posts have featured imagery resembling characters and styles from franchises such as Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon. In March, anime-style visuals were also used in a White House TikTok video celebrating U.S. airstrikes on Iran, prompting further criticism from some Japanese observers.
The White House and the State Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the latest criticism from Japan. Naruto's anime publisher, Bandai Namco Entertainment, and its animator, Studio Pierrot, also did not respond to requests for comment. The White House's prolific social media posts have also drawn from other animated franchises including "SpongeBob SquarePants," Marvel and DC Comics and "Call of Duty." But in Japan, where anime is considered a cultural treasure and central to national identity, the Trump administration's use of the imagery for political purposes has set off a strong backlash.
