Does anyone know, is it really gone..? I have it bookmarked, I have been trying the last few days to access but..

I have been using this site for 20 years, almost daily, I don't know what I'll do without it. It's by far the best dictionary. I wish there was a way to contact someone, either help donate or if maybe there is an offline version. Didn't it have mirrors? At first I thought it was temporary down but I'm worried

No that is Jim Breen's dictionary. It is useful in different ways and I think just as old, but I prefer Jeffrey's. There are actually 2 entries on Jeffrey's here on JREF that I found, which made me hopeful that people would be familiar.

I can't be sure but I just checked their whois on Whois Lookup Captcha and I can see they had an update a few days ago. Perhaps it's an update issue, I just checked wayback machine and they have a snapshot from February this year.
I've written with one of the maintainers before (many, many, MANY years ago) so I'm going to give it a go and see if he still answers on the email I have on him.
I'll report back as soon as I hear anything

The thing is, according to the JE-dict infopage, Jeffrey Friedl doesn't seem to be involved with the project anymore. Someone else once took over maintaining the site(s) so I'm not sure if he would be able to help. But I'll try whatever I can to make sure we have our beloved J-E dict online for as long as we can.
As a funny aside, I have Jeffrey Friedl's book on regular expressions sitting here on my shelf - I never knew it was the same guy

I have a copy too. First edition. I don't remember if he signed it or not. I actually helped proofread it before it was published. It's not easy to proofread regular expressions. An errant period or comma can screw the whole thing up.

I also can't be entirely sure if that is the same Jeffrey Friedl since it doesn't mention the dictionary anywhere, though he is a programmer that lives in Japan...

Definitely the same guy. I've met him in person. First time about 25 years ago. Last time about 7 years ago.

Any new updates? The mirror works for the most part, but the links to the kanji image files for the terms give an error message unfortunately.

I think they're working on the server; I can see that www.rut.org at least works. The dictionary is still down, though, and I don't have direct contact to the admins so I don't know what the status is. I hope it'll be restored eventually, but we can only wait and see.
In the mean tine, I did find another mirror you might want to check out, Japanese <-> English Dictionary Server - which is maintained by a knowledgable fellow who's been around at least since the days of Jeffrey Friedl et al. It should be steady and reliable to use.

Why not use WWWJDIC? It's probably updated more frequently and I think it has the same capabilities and dictionaries. Jeffery worked on its code back in the day.

While I used to use WWWJDIC exclusively in the past, the fuzzy search of the J-E dict just makes it a really convenient and invaluable tool when you're not quite sure of the spelling. Also, the guy who maintains the wfms site apparently helps Jim Breem so I'm hopeful the data involved is up-to-date.
