I suppose it would be somewhat courteous to introduce myself. I've lurked around JRef for about half a year now and finally decided to see what was going on in the forums. So, here I am.
はじめまして。アンドレアです。私はカナダ人です。カナダのオンタリオからきました。どうぞよろしく。
I'm Andrea. I'm in Ontario, Canada. I'm currently in university... back in first year after switching over to another degree two years into my other one (Nursing). English and History it is for me now. It's not too bad, I guess.
I'm pretty average, I would say. There's nothing too spectacular about me.
My interest in Japan, and well, most things Asian, began about half way through highschool... about five or six years ago now. I picked up watching anime once again (oh yes, I was definitely a Sailormoon fan back when it aired in English over here), once I discovered original, non-dubbed series.
My love for anime really died down a little while after that (I'm still a Prince of Tennis/Tenimyu spaz though), and over the years I became more and more interested in the East Asian cultures and their long histories. Canada doesn't really have a long (or terribly interesting, in my opinion) history, and I wanted something a little different than European history, since my parents are European and that's what they talked about.
It was when my friend did a year exchange in Japan back in 2002 that I became more specifically interested in Japan. I then wanted to learn the language. However, there wasn't enough interest, so the Japanese credit was scrapped in my last year of highschool. I went into Nursing straight out of highschool and there wasn't any room for electives... well, any electives that weren't psychology/philosophy/history of medicine, etc. So, now that I'm in a more normal program, I'm taking first year Japanese as a credit.
So, please don't mind my terrible Japanese... ^^;.
Right. So. This is a long enough introduction, eh? I think I'll leave it as it is.
