Yaru やる and Sashiageru さしあげる are both used to mean 'to give' in Japanese, but the level of politeness is different. In this video, we'll break down when and how to use these terms with clear examples!

Although we learned it I don't think I've ever heard やる in real life. Probably it's used in dramas sometimes but I don't watch those much.

You are right. We hear やるin dramas, anime's but in real life at least I never use it to someone else. It sounds a bit rude to me. But I can use it to myself ( not to other people)

I'll try to pay attention the next time my wife asks me to water a plant but I don't think she's ever told me to 水をやって to the flowers. I think she uses あげる.
