You are right. We hear やるin dramas, anime's but in real life at least I never use it to someone else. It sounds a bit rude to me. But I can use it to myself ( not to other people)

I'll try to pay attention the next time my wife asks me to water a plant but I don't think she's ever told me to 水をやって to the flowers. I think she uses あげる.
