Why did you first visit Japan?

If it's not too late , could you add military duty to the list. I checked off business but I'm not sure I would consider the U.S. Navy as a business. I thank the Navy for keeping me out of Viet Nam and in Japan for 2 years.

It probably is too late, but it can be covered under "other" and the poster can specify as you did.

I went with the US military in 1973 only to be with friends who got stationed there, and because I thought it would be cool to be in such a country so far away from home. In fact, I had no interest in Japan at that time.
I enjoyed Japan so much that I got out of the military in Japan and stayed until 1988. It really changed my life for the better.
One question to the OP: Why did you first go there? Just curious.

Yes, it was the Navy. I signed up between my junior and senior years in high school and reported for active duty just very shortly after graduation and even more shortly before my 18th birthday.
At that time, and at the school for the specialty I was in (Operations Specialist) they would receive a list of open billets for each graduating class and we got to pick our preferred duty stations from the list according to our class position. We had several slots for Hawaii, a few West Coast, a few East coast, and two billets on ships in Japan. I was 4th in my class and was sweating bullets hoping the Japan billets would still be there when I got my turn. They were, and I chose the USS Reeves (CG-24)(Guided Missile Cruiser) homeported in Yokosuka. The other was for the USS White Plains (AFS-4)(Fast Combat Stores Ship), which about a year later was transferred to Guam.

Actually we're currently flooded with your chaps. The USS Kittyhawk docked nearby a couple of days ago and at the weekend there were white uniforms everywhere we went. I gave directions to a bunch of them who were looking for "dance clubs", which I suspect is probably code for "somewhere I can get laid".

I didn't even see that option for some reason.
I am Train Buff and I enjoy travelling by Shinkansen. After I booked my trip a friend of mine and a friend decided to come along. I was worried about how they would handle the culture. At the Snow Monkey Onsen they were in the water before and out well out me they had a ball. Trains, Onsens and enjoying the culture is my main reason for visiting Japan.
