with Skirts in Japan? I have been told by a friend (who is really interested in the Japanese culture and knows a lot about it) that if you are a girl in Japan, you must wear a skirt. She said something about a short skirt being trendy and a long skirt meaning you're part of another group. Can somebody give me more info if this is true?

Also... what would the Japanese think of me? I refuse to wear skirts. I'd be in pants all the time...

I don't know much about Japan, but I know that girls wear trousers there too! ☝

Maybe skirts are more common and/or fashionable (I really dunno on that!), but certainly not all girls wear only skirts.

Many schools require uniforms(part of which is a skirt for girls) to be worn at school; maybe she ment that?

I was thinking that it must have been a shcool uniform, too. So many girls have their uniform skirts way too short, in my opinion. The girls whose skirts were longer than normal were thought be kind of bad girls about 20 years ago, but I'm not sure if any girls have their skirts long for that reason any more.

I know how you feel, Kirie_Maiden. I think girls should be able to wear pants if they want to even as a uniform, skirts just made my legs damn cold!

I do think that Japanese girls can wear trousers (yay for Britishness) aswell as skirts. I think Frank is right that it is just part of the school uniforms

Beyond school uniforms, I suppose one could argue that skirts also extend to most female office workers regardless of location or company size. OLs are easily distinguished by their company uniforms which includes a skirt although I have seen some women with the same tops but wearing dress pants instead.

Hi all,

I have never seen my wife wearing a skirt, neither my 16-year-old daughter except for her school uniform.
My wife and I have never forced her to do so.
My 70-year-old mother, my wife's mother in law, has never complained about my wife's not doing so.

And as far as I know my family is all Japanese.
Maybe something's wrong with my family but I don't (want to?)think so.

Many of my company's female office stuff attire in suits and pants and a few are with more casual dresses like denims while our salesclerks at shops are not allowed to wear other than our company uniforms with skirts.

I've heard some guys put on skirts because they think it cool though I've never seen one myself.

Considering you are 17 years old, I assume that your friend was talking about school uniforms. It is indeed the standard school uniform here in Japan for girls to have to wear a skirt. Pants are not allowed.

But there are exceptions to this. I once dated a girl from Matsumoto, and she told me that they were allowed to wear pants there instead of skirts because the winters can get awefully cold up in the mountains. I'm certain that Matsumoto is not the only place that allows for this exception.

As far as uniforms for work are concerned, it really depends on the place you work for. My current employer does not have such a requirement for women, although I suppose that one could argue that on some subconscious level it is preferrable.

But I often wonder if there is some fetish/pedophilia associated with the 'schoolgirls' so often seen in manga/hentai.
