Isn't that population collapse slated for this century? I know the OP talked about the decreasing proportion of the work force, and we all know how that will affect pensions. It's kind of weird to think about Japan, which was an economic juggernaut for so much of my youth, possibly being so vulnerable in my adult life.

I vote for increased scrutiny on public officials, more foreigners working in the professional world, and more scandals in the banking industry.

More lenient immigration policy maybe, mass immigration I doubt it.
I don't think Japan will ever be a multi-ethnic country (as least not in my life time!).

I am always wondering. Since 3/4 of Japan is mountain, would it be economical to just try to "flatten" mountain(or hill) rather than buliding VLFS? Of course the amount of earth alone need to be removed might take decades but VLFS just doesn't look like something that can stand the test of time (eg, rising sea level or earthquake).

I think I have to stop playing simcity...

But seriously, i really do hope japan learns to appriciate open public green space more....as it is when and if i live in japan its going to be somewhere in the country....i couldnt stand any closer to the centre of tokyo then the outskirts to live :S.
