Anyone want to share their experiences of when they left home for the first time to start their own lives?

You could start it off since you brought it up. Or have you not left home yet?

No, but I'll do so in a few days. It would be a huge first for me and I'm both excited and scared at the same time, so I was hoping to know how it was for other people.

When I left home I was 17 and my destination was Navy boot camp.

I remember looking around at all the others there with me and thinking, "I'm the only son of a b*tch here who gives a sh*t if I live or die".

That was a very sobering realization.

I never get homesick, and I find myself to easily adapt to any situation.

- have a plan (what are your goals, how do you want to fill your day)
- make local friends (bars, message boards, uni/dorms, sports, etc)
- realize that people are "just different" in other countries and that there is no such thing as the right way to think or do. It is all based on culture and background.

You'll be fine :)

Must have had some guts thinking like that at 17, definitely a lot more mature than I was.

Still trying my best to and in progress of the first point (making plans), other than that I guess I'll have to work on the others too. I have to clear my head so bad. Sorry for the late response though, took some time getting hands on a working internet connection.

Guts had nothing to do with it.

It was one of those "oh, crap" moments.

Maybe I (or someone on this forum) can give you some pointers if you tell a bit more about yourself:
- How old are you?
- Where in Japan will you live?
- How long will you be there?
- What are your hobbies, and how do you like to spend your spare time?

Has he told us somewhere that he's coming to Japan and I just missed the post?

Not exactly, but he told us that he is leaving home, he came to JREF to discuss it and added a Japan-related cartoon. This led me to believe he is moving to Japan (for either work or study). Maybe I was too quick with my assumptions..
